Biofabrique Vienna Challenge: Colours at Work

Biofabrique Vienna Challenge: Colours at Work

A competition is open to create workwear for the Biofabrique Vienna team.

Biofabrique Vienna is exploring how biowaste and invasive plants from Vienna and its surroundings could be used to produce natural dyes. The aim of the competition is to use these dyes in practice in the production of clothing.

Challenge is open for designers and creative professionals of all fields with expertise in design, textiles, and fashion. Experience with natural dyes is an advantage.

A series of 20 pieces of wearable workwear must be produced. For optimal dyeing results, natural fibres, especially protein-based fibres (e.g. wool, silk) are preferred. The garment must have at least one pocket; be suitable for wearing over sweaters/jackets or as a jacket on its own; have a unisex design suitable for people of different proportions; have space for the Biofabrique Vienna and VIENNA DESIGN WEEK logos. The winners must design and produce the garments in collaboration with Biofabrique Vienna and Vienna Design Week. The team members will wear the garments every day during Vienna Design Week from 24 September to 4 October 2026. One set will be exhibited both at the festival headquarters as part of the “Urban Food & Design” format and at the Biofabrique Vienna presentation in the Papageienhalle. The copyright for the design remains with the creators. The garments produced remain the property of the Vienna Business Agency and Vienna Design Week.

The individuals selected by the jury will receive up to EUR 7,500 (excl. VAT) as a fee and for the implementation of the project.

The Biofabrique Vienna team will be available for detailed questions during an online Q&A session on Wednesday, 8 April 2026 at 3:00 PM. Register in advance.

Application deadline: April 14, 2026, 23:59. Completion by: September 15, 2026.
