Democratic design: New Forms of Spatial Practices in Europe

Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory from Berlin, an interdisciplinary platform for sustainable urbanism, in association with partners including MAO, is organizing a public call entitled Democratic Design: New Forms of Spatial Practices in Europe.

The project is based on the cooperation between the European platforms of architecture and urbanism and reflects the belief in the necessity of integration and interdisciplinary thinking in the general public. It explores the mutual relations between democratic processes in the society and contemporary construction practices. Sustainable development as a priority of function in modern societies that requires new forms of integration of all stakeholders, those of which that go beyond all old patterns and established hierarchical models in society.

 

In the light of this kind of urbanism and architecture new strategies are being developed. The latter are based on a collective vision of collaboration between individual countries, experts and industries (disciplines), acting in the spirit of bridging the gap between the professional and the general public with the aim of integrating the academia and social activism. Architecture, design and urbanism have always been based on cooperation and compromise. The good examples of design practices strengthen the democratic models of development and foster the cooperation and social cohesion in society.

 

Questions that the competition will explore:

 

  • Can architects and urbanists help with the development of means necessary for the strengthening of the democracy?
  • How can the architectural processes accelerate the democratic reconversion in society?
  • What role does the interdisciplinary integration between different disciplines play in encouraging the social justice?

The competition is open to:

 

  • Architectural and urban design projects, which serve for the common good and are characterized by a multidisciplinary approach
  • Activities: cultural activities that promote inclusive spatial practices and raise the awareness of the accessibility of space for all Researchers:
  • Research or teaching activities in the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, political or social sciences that combine the didactic efforts with public awareness
  • Actors: architectural, landscape and urban design bureaus, individual creatives, groups and partnership networks, which work in the interest of broader community

 

Requirements: The abstract of the application must be no more than 500 words. Explain how does the public call relate to your work and vision. Include the existing links and references.

 

The selected projects will be exhibited at the Aedes’s premises in Berlin from 12. December to 28. January 2026. More information and the application can be found here. Application due: August 31, 2024.
