Each of her collections is an in-depth exploration of animal species endangered by human activity.

Creatives often think that our business dilemmas will be solved by an investor who believes in our product and invests in it. This time, the Skillshare will focus on what to expect from an investor and what not and how to create sustainable luxury. Our guest will be Matea Benedetti, an internationally renowned Slovenian fashion designer who has focused on luxury sustainable fashion. She will tell us more about her views on the fashion industry as well as her experience with investors in her company and her cooperation with world-famous footballer Jan Oblak and master chef Ana Roš.

Matea Benedetti creates through her fashion brand Benedetti Life, whose main guidelines are luxury aesthetics, environmental awareness, responsible consumerism and ethical business practices. She uses only non-toxic, ecological textile and production processes that do not harm water, soil or human health. Her collections are inspired by the constant search for new rare natural fibres from around the world that are carefully selected and certified. She focuses on production processes and supply chains that are focused on local production and puts the working conditions of workers at the forefront of operations.

Already during her studies, she realized that something is very wrong with the fashion industry, which not only pollutes our waters, land and air but also endangers the health of the entire planet and is also unethical. Clothing, footwear and household textiles are responsible for water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and large amounts of waste. According to some estimates, textile production is responsible for about 20% of the world’s pollution of clean water due to textile dyeing. Fast fashion – constantly providing new styles at very low prices – has resulted in large quantities of quickly discarded clothing as well as 10% of global CO2 emissions – more than international flights and maritime transport combined.

Matea Benedetti designed several collections from biodegradable and recycled materials, including pineapple leather, bamboo and recycled plastic knitwear, and is fully committed to sustainable ready-to-wear fashion. She has become a true connoisseur of the technological processes needed to make organic materials from plants. What is behind certified organic cotton? Is apple or pineapple leather better? How is silk made from wood? How to use hemp fibre in high-end fashion? How environmentally friendly is recycled plastic yarn?

Matea combines a green spirit with design and inspires responsible behaviour with beauty and luxury. Every collection she makes is an exploration of animal species that are endangered by human activity.

Matea Benedetti

Already during her studies, she realized that there is something very wrong with the fashion industry, which not only pollutes our waters, earth and air but also endangers the health of the planet and is also unethical. Although Matea Benedetti began her career as a costume designer for opera houses and theatres, she soon tackled the issue of pollution caused by the fashion industry. She launched her first sustainable collection in 2014. That same year, Vogue Italia selected her as one of the 20 most promising brands of environmentally friendly clothing in the world. In 2017, she was among the five finalists for the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, founded by Livia Firth and awarded during Milan Fashion Week. In 2018, she received the Positive Luxury Award and the Big See Fashion Design Award, and in 2020, alongside Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood, she participated in the Red Carpet Green Dress in Los Angeles, hosted by film director and producer James Cameron and Suzy Amis Cameron.
