Poligon’s research has become a key tool for planning the post-covid regeneration of the cultural-creative sector. In the spring of 2022, for the fourth time in two years, you are being asked how you live, work and what your prospects are for the future.

So far, 3,454 cultural and creative workers have participated in the research: from the self-employed in culture, employees in public institutions, students to employees in companies. We want to respond as much as possible this time as well.

Data collection is anonymous, so be completely honest.

Survey takes 15 minutes. In the case of extensive answers to optional open-ended questions, it may take longer.

If at all possible, persevere to the end.

Again, we need at least 1000 solved surveys, so please pass the survey on to your co-workers and colleagues. The survey can be found here.

Announcement

MADE IN SLOVENIA 4.0

12 Jan 2022

For the next few weeks, we will reveal to you which products have received the Made in Slovenia mark of excellence. The expert jury reviewed as many as 76 entries and awarded a badge of excellence to 23 products that were included in the collection, which will be presented in April at Design Week in Milan.

The “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence is awarded to products that represent good practices of Slovenian artists and companies. In this way, we create a collection that is recognized as good Slovenian design, promotes sustainable principles and contributes to cooperation between the creative and economic sectors.

In this call, we particularly addressed products and services that foresee systemic change, offer a critique of existing market and economic systems, break established, often harmful social habits, bring new uses and have the potential to become a serial product or service that abandons established ways of working. We were looking for small series products (and services) that are designed and manufactured in Slovenia and are thoughtful, functional and sustainable.

The jury met twice. At the first meeting, they discussed 59 products that applied to the open call and selected 16 products from among them. At the second meeting, the jury discussed another 17 products proposed for inclusion by the jury members themselves. Out of these seven other products, were awarded the mark of excellence.

All products that have received the Made in Slovenia mark of excellence can be found here.

Exhibition

MADE IN exhibition in Dresden

5 Nov - 12 Dec 2021

Dresden, Germany

The MADE IN platform promotes cooperation and the exchange of knowledge between traditional craftsmen and contemporary designers by connecting design, research and heritage. It brings together artisans, designers, researchers, curators and theorists to ask current issues related to heritage and production.

The traveling exhibition MADE IN: Crafts and Design Narratives opened for the first time on 17 February 2020 at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb. The exhibition was hosted at the Museum of Architecture and Design between 16 May and 20 September 2020. This time, the last exhibition is organized by the Kunstgewerbemuseum at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden together with the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau.

Where is something produced? By whom? What is it made of? In a time of technological overturn and constant shortage of resources, we feel a desire to learn more about the origins of our goods. MADE IN, a platform for research, design and cultural heritage, brings together craft companies and creative professionals to address these issues.

At the heart of the exhibition is an archive that presents and displays the work of around forty craft companies from different regions of Europe in the form of objects, photo documentation and stories, including carpentry and ceramics workshops, as well as dairy and cork manufacturers. The range of companies shows similarities: how deeply rooted are the practices and knowledge in individual regions, the emotional connection with techniques and resources – as well as the uncertain future of traditions.

Eight companies, together with creatives from all over Europe, worked intensively on the central issues and challenges of each regional production; how can we creatively invent something new with local resources and old handicraft traditions?

If you are wandering around Dresden, you are invited to visit the exhibition; otherwise, you can see some photos here to read more about the project.

MADE IN

The 27th edition of BIO, Europe’s longest standing design biennale (since 1963), staged and held by Ljubljana’s Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the Center for Creativity, will be curated by Jane Withers, a leading design curator, writer, and consultant based in London.

Global expansion and the pursuit of profit at the planet’s expense have precipitated the climate crisis and accelerated a massive imbalance between humanity and the natural world. Super Vernaculars, Bio 27’s central theme, explores a growing and ambitious movement that takes inspiration from vernacular and indigenous architecture and design traditions around the world to shape a radical vision for a more resilient and responsive future.

The OPEN CALL invites local design and interdisciplinary collectives and teams to participate in the Super Vernaculars production platform by addressing one of the following three themes:

  • Grains for Brains under the mentorship of Carolien Niebling, a designer and researcher who specialises in food-related projects.
  • Communicating Modern Architecture under the mentorship of Adam Štěch. Adam has a master’s degree in the History of Art from Charles University in Prague and is a co-founder of the creative group OKOLO
  • Water – Designing a BioVernacular under the mentorship of Shneel Malik, an architect, biodesign researcher, social entrepreneur and TEDx speaker.

We are looking for established collectives, teams or newly-formed project groups from the geographical region of Slovenia who will have the option to participate in one of the three projects themes of the bio 27 and the Centre for Creativity production platform.

Bio 27 amplifies the biennial strategy to reflect on and deepen inquiries into the future, while strengthening the local impacts. The emphasis will be on design that responds to local needs and contexts, the commissioned projects will draw on local conditions, resources and materials.

Applicants will be selected and invited by bio 27 curator Jane Withers in collaboration with bio 27 mentors and advisory board. The three teams selected from the Open Call will each work with a design mentor and various local experts.

To view the entire documentation, more detailed project presentations of projects and to complete the application, visit the website www.bio27.si.

We would kindly invite English speaking creatives as well. Two major biennial goals are: focusing on local knowledge (Slovene participants) and to lower our carbon footprint. However, if you live or work in Slovenia, please take a look at our website and apply!

Not all innovations are disruptive, even if they are revolutionary. For example, the first cars in the late 19th century were not a disruptive novelty, as early cars were expensive luxury items that did not disturb the existing horse-drawn carriage market. It remained unimpaired until the dawn of first cheap Ford T model in 1908. Only mass production of cars could become disruptive. Often, disruptive innovations arise from “critiques” of existing systems, like economic and business methods, and from the reflection on existing systems, where they identify “possible points of intervention” on established practices to establish systemic change.

For this call, we are looking for creative innovations, products and services that foretell systemic change, offer critique of existing market and economic systems, break established, often harmful social habits, envision new uses and have the potential to become a serial product or service that abandons established practices. These can be products for the home and everyday life as well as digital applications that improve the lives of users, or the design of services that have in mind the well-being of society, especially in terms of planning user, infrastructure, communication and material components social change.

The need for systemic change was further fuelled by the pandemic, which brought to light that in the future the production of goods would have to be redirected back to local communities, and that it is important to preserve local tangible and intangible resources (preserving and integrating traditional crafts into new practices, saving energy and other resources, etc.).

With this call, we are looking for concepts, products and services that answer new social questions, interrupt established practices and seek new, socially conscious ways of working that are developed locally and aimed at rationalising resources (closed material circle, reuse, etc.) and new methods of production or use. Above all, we are looking for products with high design and functional value. Based on the proposals, we will select products for group presentation at international design weeks, fairs and exhibitions (in 2022), such as Design Week in Milan.

Each of the shortlisted applicants will be entitled to a gross grant of EUR 2000 to cover the costs of making or improving a prototype or the cost of presentation at an exhibition in Milan.

Submit your proposals to us by 1 October 2021. An individual applicant can submit a maximum of three proposals. Apply using a form that includes a brief description and features of the product and three photos.

Detailed information on the call can be found here.

After successful presentations in Vienna and Berlin, we also sent small exhibitions The Future of Living all around the world. The exhibitions, which are a promotional event of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, were created in cooperation between the Centre for Creativity / MAO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in each country. They are currently on display in Tel Aviv, Pristina and Stuttgart.

You can see more about the exhibitions on the Future of Living page.

The exhibition The Future of Living will be presented at as many as 25 locations and events around the world, dedicated to design and the creative economy, to which we in Slovenia have dedicated this year. The modular design enables travelling around the world, to the countries of South America (Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina), Central and Western Europe (Germany, Spain, France), the Balkans (Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Northern Macedonia), the Middle East (Israel, Palestine, Egypt) and the United States. With an extended version, it began its journey in Vienna and Berlin and continues it during design weeks in Zagreb, Milan, Budapest and London.

The projects presented at The Future of Living foretell the future of living, where raw materials are no longer in abundance, where the methods of production and use of human resources must be rationalised and products must be brought closer to a new generation of users who want customised solutions. These are in technologically advanced and innovative manufacturing, which manufacturers and designers combine with a love of life and nature. The presented products and services combine creativity with a business vision. They highlight the stories of fresh brands that express functionality, passion, innovative ways of using materials, especially wood, and new production techniques based on regional craftsmanship and advanced sustainable manufacturing techniques.

Made in Slovenia at the furniture salon “Rutar”

24 May 2021

Rutar, Ljubljana

At the Centre for Creativity, we are constantly looking for new opportunities for Slovenian creatives and creative companies, so in cooperation with various partners, we present a selection of products that we include in sales exhibitions. This time, in cooperation with the “Rutar” furniture salon, we prepared a sale of furniture and home accessories, which received the “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence. Selected products for sale in the Rutar salon in Ljubljana are designed and made in Slovenia from locally sourced materials.

Products demonstrate functionality, a passion for life and nature, innovative use of materials, especially wood, and rely on local crafts and advanced techniques of sustainable production. Working with the company Rutar, we present good practices of Slovenian artists and companies. Recipients of the mark of excellence “Made in Slovenia” have been included in the collection, which will be recognised as good Slovenian design and promote ethical principles of design and production.

The “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence confirms that the product is: made and designed in Slovenia, sustainable, innovative, thoughtful, clear and functional, socially engaged.

The products will be available only in the Rutar showroom in Ljubljana at Premrlova ulica 14. Opening hours are from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th of May, from 9.00 to 20.00.

In the spring and fall of 2020, we evaluated the impact of the covid-19 epidemic on your life and work. In total, over 3,100 cultural and creative workers participated in both surveys. Many activities in our sector are still closed so we are evaluating for the third time.

This time we are focusing on overview of your business and life in 2020 and in the first four months of 2021. Like last year, we will publish the results of this study in the media and share it with all key decision makers and advocates in the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia and Europe.

Data collection is anonymous, so be as honest as possible. The survey takes 10 to 15 minutes. In the case of a detailed answer to optional open-ended questions, it can also take longer. The survey can be found here.

We are very interested in the results of the research, and we thank you for your cooperation.

“I am looking forward to the project, because as a chef I am always on the lookout for new ideas on how to present my dishes. At one point white plates were replaced by unique products from the hands of potters, carpenters, and other craftsmen. Giving the artist the opportunity to be unbothered by notions of how the object will end up being used on the table seems like a great idea to me. Products that are created this way go beyond the limits of the everyday, the expected, and the comfortable. I want unusual shapes and unusual materials that will allow me to step into the unknown.”

Jakob Pintar, chef

As part of the programme DESIGN DINING: Slovenian table setting design, organised by the Museum for Architecture and Design, in cooperation with the Centre for Creativity under the European Distributed Design Market Platform, we are announcing an open call. The call is looking for up to 10 design teams to design a table setting, and offers both financial incentives and the opportunity to produce the setting in a limited series. The selected table setting will be presented at pop-up dinners and exhibitions at home and abroad.

The theme, which will connect the selected products with each other and with the menu created by the young award-winning chef Jakob Pintar, head chef at Ljubljana’s Tabar restaurant, is RITUAL. We are looking for different concepts and approaches that emphasize the ritualistic aspect of nourishment, that preserve and honour it, yet also serve as a challenge to it and are experimental in the way that they make room for the establishment of new rituals.

What are we offering to designers?

  • Collaboration with renowned Slovenian chef Jakob Pintar in creating a table setting for a new culinary experience.
  • Financial incentive: EUR 1,500 (including VAT) will be allocated to each designer for the design of a new product.
  • Individual counselling and educational workshops with gallerist Veerle Wenes (Valerie Traan Gallery, Belgium) and the General Manager of the Jezeršek Culinary House, Martin Jezeršek.
  • Wider recognition at home and abroad through pop-up dinners and exhibitions. We will connect with partners from the EU platform Distributed Design Market Platform and host events at Vienna Design Week, Zagreb Design Week, and BIO 27 in Ljubljana.
  • Experience working in a group process.

The deadline for submitting conceptual designs and prototypes is May 18, 2021. You can find more about the application process here.

Upon concluding the tenth ECIS 2020 entitled Framing Creative Futures, the organizers announced that the next European Creative Industries Summit will take place next year in Ljubljana!

Videos and materials from ECIS2020 are available here.

With the upcoming Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2021, the European Creative Business Network (ECBN) has invited the Centre for Creativity (CzK) and Creative Industries Styria to serve as co-organizers of the next annual European Creative Industries Summit (ECSI) during the Slovenian Presidency of the EU. ECIS conferences, which bring together some 200 participants from up to 20 countries, focus on policy makers, governance, cultural creative centres, researchers, educators and, above all, intermediaries and innovators from all sectors of the cultural and creative industries and the wider creative economy.

The forthcoming European Creative Industries Summit 2021 (# ECIS2021) will analyse the consequences of the current COVID-19 pandemic and examine the current state of European creative industries. The conference will also examine the needs and development in education and skills for creative professionals today. In addition, the conference will provide an overview of the relationship between the creative industries and the European Green Deal, as well as opportunities for business cooperation and collaboration.

The European Creative Industries Summit (ECIS) was set up in 2010 by the European Network of Creative Industries (ECBN) as a conference for creative professionals and intermediaries to discuss the situation in the European cultural and creative economy. Today, ECIS is the largest annual summit of cultural and creative industries (CCI), bringing together more than 200 European experts in the capital of the current EU Presidency. The conference aims to provide information on current developments in the CCI sector, as well as to find possible solutions and discuss European policy. The European Creative Industries Summit (ECIS) is an annual conference of the European creative economy dedicated to this sector, so ECSI, as a project manager, works with local organizations every year to organize this event in parallel with the EU Presidency.

We invite you to participate in the DIVA project workshop, which creates an ecosystem of cross-border Italian-Slovenian cooperation for social and technological innovations in the emerging society of the future.

The online workshop is aimed at stakeholders in the wider cross-border region, as it will provide information on the forthcoming DIVA call for pilot cooperation projects, which promotes cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in the cultural and creative sector.

The workshop is free, and registration is required.

The DIVA project (Interreg IT-SI, 2019–2022) develops an innovation ecosystem and value chains: it supports cross-border innovation with the help of creative industries. The intention is to improve cooperation between Italian and Slovenian innovation platforms, educational institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises. We pay special attention to the development and implementation of methodologies for enabling and encouraging cooperation between creative and artistic individuals and organizations and companies. Introducing an artistic way of thinking into innovation processes is designed to better enable the flow of visionary ideas into technological, commercial and social innovation.

Research project High Quality Design in Visual Communications: Identification and implementation is a coproduction of Centre for creativity and Brumen Foundation within programme of Partner Network CzK 2020.

Fundamental problem addressed by the project is lack of established, credible or relevant arguments for additional value for high quality design of visual communications – the ones that could be well structured, easily accessed and fine-tuned for our context and available all in one spot. To confront this problem, we identified a set of clear and objective arguments for all those that have to justify the additional value of good design. Argument repository would be a publication; something like a manual used practically as a gadget, almost like the Pantone Swatch.

We as designers often face difficulty of justifying the importance of quality in design of visual media. Company employees that are aware of the value of good design, often have hard time convincing the higher management investing time and money in it. Decision-makers and representatives of institutions often perceive in narrow aspect (for instance economic) and most of the other features like social and environmental are set aside. For that reason, we want to focus on audiences that would be divided in three groups. First and primary group would be designers, design students and everyone involved in “Cultural and creative sector”. Second group would be clients and finally third would include the wider public.

Rather than calculating the fees, project would concentrate more on recognising of additional value that is brought by design services, that should result in raising the fees. At the moment, we are collecting available documents and researches dealing with value of design and also searching for good examples of praxis. Based on that data we would be able to develop good models, that would make lobbying for high quality design more frictionless – most of available research is based on foreign examples and hard to apply to local conditions. Publication could be used as reference for anyone interested in theoretical developments in design, as a survey of on-site conditions, as every profession needs theoretical back-up for developing in education and terminology and keeping the public conversation going.

Publication is planned to come out in spring of 2021 – following the print there will be also an online edition on websites of Brumen Foundation and czk.si.

Project is a part of Partner network of CzK Platform, financed by European union from European fund for regional development and Republic of Slovenia.

Most people are already familiar with Kickstarter as a crowdfunding platform that enables young artists, architects, painters, photographers and entrepreneurs to raise funds in order to help launch their ideas, products and companies.

Opportunity for creative Slovenian projects

In September of 2020, Kickstarter will officially open the platform to Slovenian projects – to all local artists, sculptors, photographers, architects, painters and more; to all those have shown to be the most successful creative branches on the Kickstarter platform.

What that means in practice

From now on, it won’t be necessary to register a company abroad, with all the expenditures and obstacles that come with it, simply in order to become part of the platform. This also means that our local partners, who are already collaborating with Kickstarter, will help you with your launch and help make your campaign more successful.

Some successful Slovenian creative projects include:

“In Mila.Vert we are making pieces that are relatable with people and at the same time reduce the negative impact on environment, presenting a big problem in fashion production. Our clothes are timeless in order to prolong their cycle. Although we make classic, quality pieces, we are very concentrated on details which make clothes more beautiful and still modern.” as explained by brands founder and designer Tina Logar Bauchmüller.

About the designer

Brand is Tina Logar Bauchmüller’s idea as she always wanted to create clothes that will represent the best pieces in her wardrobe. she started making clothes with her grandmother, seamstress herself, that helped her create her ideas. Tina prefers simple classic designs that never go out of fashion, but she gives a lot of attention to particularities like neckline, different tones to textiles or specific feeling the fabric imprints on skin.  She is collaborating with experienced seamstresses and is inspired by creative bloggers, photographers and other fashion enthusiasts. Tina is aware that it is hard to make a change as an individual, but she firmly believes that big things can happen if people in different professional fields come together for the same cause.

Mila.Vert is blend between Tina’s enthusiasm for creating clothes and her values, that represent essence of her fashion brand.

About the project

Made in Slovenia is prevents common situation in fashion industry where fashion brand’s name is in put first and the geographic origin of the production fades in to the background. In contemporary fashion there is a disconnect between designer and process of production. Consequences are contempt towards textile production, disappearance traditional crafts, vanishing of local textile techniques and also inhumane and unecological conditions for work and production. Slovenian designers in are facing burning question “Who made your clothes?” and the answer is “We made them ourselves with help of Slovenian companies, craftsmen and artisans”. Hence the conceptual replacement in the branding of the project and the products created through it. Made in Slovenia becomes a brand, designer and the place of the production, which perverts the current logic of fashion branding.

All products in Made in Slovenia project are taking into account the principles of sustainable and environmental production; are oriented towards artisanal work and endorse local economies with domestic crafts and contemporary design. All products are made in small series with emphasised elements of cultural tradition, rich textile heritage in Slovenia and creative designs. Project is part of partner network CzK. It is financed by Europen union from European fund for regional development and Republic of Slovenia.

MAO and the CzK team answered an invitation from the partner organisation Het Nieuwe Instituutinstitute for architecture, design and digital culture—and visited the Netherlands for an educational trip and a presentation of the Dutch creative sector.

Alongside Motovila and representatives from Kino Otok and Kinoatelje, we met with the Dutch organisation from the cultural and creative sector, including Stimulirungsfondan architectural, design and digital culture fund; DutchCulture—a network for international cultural cooperation; Waagan organisation that operates at the intersection of science, technology and the arts; Creative Holland initiative; a representative from architectural buro UNStudio, architectural centre ARCAM, cultural foundation NDSM, museums EYE Filmmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and FOAM Museum, Studio Makkink & Bey, Droog, the national platform for circular economy Blue City and many other organisations.

The goal of the visit was to strengthen cooperation between different creatives and organisations from the Slovenian and Dutch creative sectors, upgrade or develop new projects, and exchange experiences and good practices in this domain. Centre for Creativity, along with its partners, will continue to develop these international networks and encourage the development of measures for stronger internationalization and sector mobility.
