We invite you to participate in the round table on the publication of the book Value Creation: The value and effects of designing visual messages and the factors affecting them, with authors Robert Ilovar and Ajda Schmidt and guests dr. Barbara Predan, Miho Klinar and dr. Kristina Pranjić.

The research was co-produced with the Centre for Creativity in 2021 in response to convincing and relevant arguments for the added value of quality visual message design that would be meaningfully structured, easily accessible, tailored locally and all gathered in one place. The publication contains summaries and analysis of existing literature in the field of design value and addresses the main issues related to the value of visual message design. In the concluding part, it presents a model for understanding value, which inhibit or prevent its full utilization.

Join us on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 6:00 pm at the Museum for Architecture and Design.

Each of her collections is an in-depth exploration of animal species endangered by human activity.

Creatives often think that our business dilemmas will be solved by an investor who believes in our product and invests in it. This time, the Skillshare will focus on what to expect from an investor and what not and how to create sustainable luxury. Our guest will be Matea Benedetti, an internationally renowned Slovenian fashion designer who has focused on luxury sustainable fashion. She will tell us more about her views on the fashion industry as well as her experience with investors in her company and her cooperation with world-famous footballer Jan Oblak and master chef Ana Roš.

Matea Benedetti creates through her fashion brand Benedetti Life, whose main guidelines are luxury aesthetics, environmental awareness, responsible consumerism and ethical business practices. She uses only non-toxic, ecological textile and production processes that do not harm water, soil or human health. Her collections are inspired by the constant search for new rare natural fibres from around the world that are carefully selected and certified. She focuses on production processes and supply chains that are focused on local production and puts the working conditions of workers at the forefront of operations.

Already during her studies, she realized that something is very wrong with the fashion industry, which not only pollutes our waters, land and air but also endangers the health of the entire planet and is also unethical. Clothing, footwear and household textiles are responsible for water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and large amounts of waste. According to some estimates, textile production is responsible for about 20% of the world’s pollution of clean water due to textile dyeing. Fast fashion – constantly providing new styles at very low prices – has resulted in large quantities of quickly discarded clothing as well as 10% of global CO2 emissions – more than international flights and maritime transport combined.

Matea Benedetti designed several collections from biodegradable and recycled materials, including pineapple leather, bamboo and recycled plastic knitwear, and is fully committed to sustainable ready-to-wear fashion. She has become a true connoisseur of the technological processes needed to make organic materials from plants. What is behind certified organic cotton? Is apple or pineapple leather better? How is silk made from wood? How to use hemp fibre in high-end fashion? How environmentally friendly is recycled plastic yarn?

Matea combines a green spirit with design and inspires responsible behaviour with beauty and luxury. Every collection she makes is an exploration of animal species that are endangered by human activity.

Matea Benedetti

Already during her studies, she realized that there is something very wrong with the fashion industry, which not only pollutes our waters, earth and air but also endangers the health of the planet and is also unethical. Although Matea Benedetti began her career as a costume designer for opera houses and theatres, she soon tackled the issue of pollution caused by the fashion industry. She launched her first sustainable collection in 2014. That same year, Vogue Italia selected her as one of the 20 most promising brands of environmentally friendly clothing in the world. In 2017, she was among the five finalists for the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, founded by Livia Firth and awarded during Milan Fashion Week. In 2018, she received the Positive Luxury Award and the Big See Fashion Design Award, and in 2020, alongside Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood, she participated in the Red Carpet Green Dress in Los Angeles, hosted by film director and producer James Cameron and Suzy Amis Cameron.

The symposium The World Inside: Designing Modern Interiors, 1930–Today, organised in cooperation with the Museum for Architecture and Design and designed as a central part of the programs of the exhibition The World Within: Designing Modern Interiors, 1930-present, will take place in MAO. Tuesday, 9 November at 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition, which for the first time on a large scale deals with the interior as a subject of systematic research and evaluation, is on view at the Museum for Architecture and Design until 28 November 2021.

The symposium will discuss the future of living through the prism of interior design in four sets. We will open questions about the porosity of the interior by blurring the boundaries between private and public, the impact of information technology on the interior, the home as the basic living cell of every person, the conditions necessary for comfort and well-being and ethical and ecological responsibility in interior design as well as about its positioning in the architectural design profession.

The discursive segment will bring together experts working in various fields: architects, designers, lighting experts, psychologists and researchers, with whom we will establish the interior as space that can respond quickly to the socio-cultural context in which it is created and one which has an important role in its creation.

The Future of Living: Paris

8 Sep −15 Sep 2021

Paris Design Week

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

As part of Paris Design Week, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Paris set up an exhibition entitled The Future of Living at the famous Gallery Joseph Paris. Slovenian design garnered a lot of interest, from both the professional and general public.

Paris Design Week, which will take place at several locations in Paris, has been selected to present the new design. On this occasion, new trends are set and different generations of designers are connected, from young to internationally renowned. This year’s theme was “desirable development”, which is also linked to the way out of the difficult crisis period associated with the coronavirus. For Design Week, Paris is completely disguised in the yellow and black colors of the event, with 350 entities participating, from large museums and department stores to art schools, galleries and boutiques, which are visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

In a special innovative set of Paris Design Week Factory, a smaller version of the exhibition of 35 innovative and sustainable Slovenian products from a total of 90 products that received the “Made in Slovenia” badge of excellence was on display. The Slovenian exhibition was well attended, and Slovenian innovative products received great attention, positive responses and excellent evaluations from both the professional and general public. At the same time, Spirit Slovenija organized a very resounding group presentation of six Slovenian companies at the world’s leading fair for interior design and design, Maison & Objet.

n this occasion, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Paris also organized a reception, which was attended by over 300 people.

The field of design and interior design is undoubtedly an area where some designers and Slovenian companies have already established themselves well on the French market, but at the same time there is still a lot of open potential.

The Future of Living project was created in cooperation between the Center for Creativity / MAO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and the Embassies of the Republic of Slovenia abroad. The exhibition, which was on view in Paris between 8 and 15 September 2021, is part of a series of promotional events for the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Every creator wants his/her works to find their way into the world, and there are many channels through which to do that. Various physical stores, trade shows and online platforms are available, and each of these sales channels has its own characteristics and its own target audience.

Among the more serious, specialized and increasingly recognized channels for this purpose is the Etsy platform, with tens of millions of customers from around the world.

Join us for the first workshop in the autumn season of Creative Accelerator, where Anita Česnik Mažgon, owner of the All Little Rockstars store on Etsy, will explain in detail how the platform works and what you need to pay attention to when setting up a store, sending items and doing business.

In the workshop, you will learn:

  • what is Etsy
  • what types of vendors the Etsy platform is intended for
  • what are the selling costs
  • what we need to sell
  • shipping products and postage price
  • how to set up an Etsy store
  • what are the business terms and conditions
  • how we edit the look of the store
  • what photos of products we need
  • how to find and choose the right keywords and how to use them
  • how to deal with shipping, packaging and what are the associated costs
  • how to set up payment

Register for the workshop on our website by clicking on the ‘register’ button in the upper right corner. You must create your user account before logging in.

Anita Česnik Mažgon

Anita is the founder of the FB group “Slovenian Etsy Entrepreneurs” (You-rock.si), and in the spring of 2020, she organized the Etsy conference “You rock on Etsy”. She is also involved in the SIO 2019 mentoring project.

The Future of Living: Montenegro

10 Sep −6 Oct 2021

| The Future of Living

Kotor, Podgorica

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

The exhibition The Future of Living in Montenegro is made in cooperation with the Slovenian Embassy in Podgorica and will be presented at two locations; in Kotor (10 Sept. – 20 Sept.) and in Podgorica (22 Sept – 6 Oct).

The presented products predict the future of living, where raw materials are no longer in abundance, where it is necessary to rationalize the methods of production and use of human resources and bring the products closer to the new generation of users who want tailor-made solutions. These are in technologically advanced and innovative manufacturing, which manufacturers and designers combine with a love of life and nature. The presented products and services combine creativity with a business vision. They highlight the stories of fresh brands that express functionality, passion, innovative ways of using materials, especially wood, and new production techniques that rely on regional craftsmanship and advanced sustainable manufacturing techniques.

The travelling exhibition The Future of Living, created as a result of cooperation between the Center for Creativity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian missions abroad, is one of the major promotional events of the Slovenian Presidency of the EU Council in 2021.

DESIGN DINING: Pop-Up Dinner & Exhibition at Vienna Design Week

24 Sep - 3 Oct 2021

Vienna

Pop-up Dinner: 1 and 2 October 2021, at 19:00, Silent Loft, Vienna

Exhibition: 24 September – 3 October 2021, Vienna Design Week, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1200 Vienna

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

From time immemorial eating has been a ritualistic practice and closely related to design, be it as an everyday ritual or a special, sensory experience with a concept. It is on this premise that we have decided to join the stories of design and gastronomy into a unique dining experience authored by chef Jakob Pintar from TaBar in cooperation with select designers.

Based on their shared values of local, sustainable, sensory and ritualistic, the design and culinary mindset were combined into a nine-course vegetarian menu featuring a new, limited series of unique tableware pieces by nine designers and designer collectives.

The concept for each dish was developed and complemented hand in hand with the idea of an individual design piece, with the focus on simple, local ingredients and materials as well as experimental forms and bold flavors. The corn tableware by designer Rok Oblak and the plate made entirely of soil from a field in Poljanska Dolina elevate corn from its role of functional food to a sustainable, ethical and aesthetical experience. Forks by designer Vera Fois are part of her Forbidden Cutlery collection, which she uses as a tool to question our eating behavior, our customs and strict rules of conduct at the meal table as well as to explore what happens when we are allowed to break those rules. The design piece by Nuša Jelenec and Katarina Dekleva is a hand-made wine glass with an irregular glass bowl rim that offers a funny sensory experience when touched with lips and tongue. Join us and meet the rest of design products, let yourself be swept away by the evening’s events and enjoy the flavors, textures, colors, aromas and designs!

The price for this culinary and design experience is 75 EUR and includes:

  • 9-course vegetarian menu at the Silent Loft in Vienna, served on Slovenian Tableware Design from the limited series of new design pieces,
  • a 20 EUR voucher for the purchase of design pieces.

Wine and other drinks will be served separately.

The number of seating positions at a dinner is limited to 25. Tickets can be bought in MAO web shop.

Entry to events is subject to the RVT (recovered, vaccinated, tested) condition.

DESIGN DINING: Slovenian Tableware Design is a programme, run by the Museum of Architecture and Design together with Centre for Creativity under the auspices of Distributed Design Market Platform. Exhibition that is presented at the Vienna Design Week was organised in cooperation with Slovenian Culture and Information Centre in Austria (SKICA).

On Monday, June 21, 2021, the opening of the exhibition The Future of Living took place in Pristina, which will be on view until July 4, 2021. The exhibition will be open until July 4 2021 in the Lapidary of the National Museum of Kosovo.

The exhibition, organized in cooperation between the Center for Creativity / MAO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Pristina, and the hosts, the National Museum of Kosovo, was opened by Tina Lampelj. The Opening ceremony was followed by a guided tour of the exhibition. The gathered guests were enthusiastic about the exhibition, as the creative and design sector in Kosovo is only in the initial stages of development, but it shows great potential. The state pays too little attention to the sector, and on the other hand, donor countries invest a lot in this area.

Adorno: VOYAGE

From 10 Jun 2021

Online

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

We are pleased to present “VOYAGE”, a Slovenian collection curated by Anja Radović and Urška Krivograd. The collection is based on Xavier de Maistre’s 1790 novel, “A Journey Around My Room”, in which the author made the best of a 42 day confinement by exploring and documenting his room as a travel journal.

Piled high and set askew in a reflection of our contemporary experience of self-isolation, the collection explores the adjustments we have made to our living spaces to function for a variety of needs: working, learning, living, relaxing, exercising, socialising, among many others. Through the work of eleven established and emerging makers, Radović and Krivograd draw attention to how our relationships to home and the objects we surround ourselves with have changed over the last year. Whether playful, spiritual, contemplative, or purely functional, the selected pieces tell a range of stories about the investigation of processes, materials, forms, functions, and aesthetics.

“Although words such as ‘lockdown’, ‘quarantine’ and ‘self-isolation’ have a negative connotation, we wanted to focus more on the bright side of the experience we went through: to embrace what we already have, [celebrating] and [finding] inspiration in objects that decorate our homes and are making it easier for our minds to relax, wonder, and travel.”

Six designers will take part in this edition, design collectives that present an overview of the ceramic production of the local space. The medium of ceramics has again become a popular and recognised in the field of design and art in the last decade, which is also reflected in the increase in the number of artists who have chosen this material to bring their ideas to life. The selection of designers was influenced by the variety of techniques used to process the material. Through individualised and innovative production approaches in the use and processing of the material, designers develop functional and decorative ceramic products of various volumes.

We invite you to visit us and meet the designers in the Project Office of the Centre for Creativity, Partizanska c. 11, in Maribor, where their products will be available for sale on Thursday, 15 July 2021, between 6 pm and 10 pm, and on Friday, 16 July 2021, between 10 am and 6 pm.

The flexibility of creative companies and the ability to adapt quickly to digital markets remains one of the most popular trends of recent times. Therefore, when developing and upgrading the brand, it is necessary to be open to opportunities for cooperation and partnerships with other companies from the same and another fields, to reach new target audiences and to offer more integrated solutions or products.

This lecture and workshop will be held by Alja Horvat, illustrator and graphic designer from Maribor and recipient of the Elle Style Award 2019 in the ‘Young Talent’ category and included in the Forbes list ‘30 under 30’ in the Art & Culture category. Alja is known for her successful brand, and we will focus mainly on her cooperation with domestic and foreign companies, such as: Barcaffe, Renault Slovenia, Urban Outfitters, ban.do, Anthropologie and Causebox.

The workshop will address:

  • why cooperation with other brands and companies is important,
  • what needs to be considered when selecting and establishing new collaborations,
  • how to plan, monitor and complete collaboration (criteria, goals, performance analysis),
  • various cooperation strategies,
  • concluding cooperation agreements and determining the scope of work of each partner,
  • examples of good and bad cooperation practices.

You can also follow Alja on Instagram: @aljahorvat.

You need to register for the workshop on our website by clicking on the ‘register’ button in the upper right corner. You must create your user account before logging in.

She mostly creates with her graphic tablet but also likes to use a brush and draw with gouache and oil. She is inspired by everything around her, especially nature and museums. As a big fan of the 60s and 70s, she tries to include these periods in her illustrations, so that we can also feel a drop of nostalgia in her works. Alja is a recipient of the Elle Style Awards 2019 in the 'Young Talent' category and part of Forbes' '30 under 30' list in the Art & Culture category. Her collaborations include Urban Outfitters, ban.do, a fashion collection from Anthropologie and a residence in Los Angeles at Causebox, and she has also collaborated with Slovenian companies such as Barcaffe and Renault Slovenia.

The Future of Living: Berlin

27 May −6 Jun 2021

Potsdamer Str. 81-83, Berlin

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

This year’s theme of Berlin Design Week / BNDNWK 2021 / is “New Traditions”. New crises call for new, fast strategies for their containment. Resolute, clear-cut sustainable design has the potential to start a new, better normal. The exhibition The Future of Living at BNDNWK 2021 demonstrates the innovative ways in which Slovenian design responds to future challenges with products that combine local materials with traditional craftsmanship. Companies, researchers, and decision-makers need the creative power of design, fresh ideas, new strategies, and concepts for social change and vice-versa.

The exhibition opens at Potsdamer Str. 81-83 in Berlin, in a standalone venue. The prime location and a 20m-long shop window open out onto one of the busiest streets in Berlin, ensuring good visibility for Slovenian design. The exhibition is a standalone venue and was developed in cooperation with the Centre for Creativity/MAO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Berlin and SKICA – Slovenian Cultural Centre in Berlin.

The exhibition in Berlin is the first exhibition as part of major promotional events organised in the framework of the Slovenian presidency to the Council of the European Union. The exhibition The Future of Living launched in Vienna, and after a stop in Berlin will continue its journey through Zagreb, Budapest, Paris, London, Denmark, Finland, Egypt, Israel, United States of America and other destinations. We will showcase our designs in 25 locations and events celebrating design and the creative economy, the central theme marking this year in Slovenia.

The products showcased by the exhibition forecast the future of living, in which raw materials are no longer available in abundance, production methods and human resources need to be rationalised, and products are adapted to a new generation of users who want customised solutions. These come with innovative, technologically advanced production processes that producers and designers combine with their love of life and nature. The products and services presented here combine creativity with a business vision. They spotlight the stories of fresh brands that express functionality, passion, innovative applications of materials (especially wood), and new production techniques that build on regional craftsmanship and advanced techniques of sustainable production.

The exhibition features 43 of the 90 selected products that have received the “Made in Slovenia” mark of design excellence in the last two years. In many respects, the collection represents the efforts of the Centre for Creativity – which operates under the wing of the Museum of Architecture and Design – to connect, promote, support, and develop the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia, to facilitate collaboration with the business, science and education sectors.

Many designers featured in the exhibition employ traditional crafts in innovative ways. Darja Malešič turned to traditional Slovenian wicker craft to protect the bottles in her wicker water bottle series with materials such as willow, corn husk, and rye straw. Vulgaris Woodcut wine studiolo combines excellence in furniture making with an original woodcut in an astounding object for wine lovers. Belabela’s home accessories engage users in the production cycle, inviting them to use their hands to complete the laser-cut coasters with their embroideries. The modular wine rack Helga was designed by Sadar+Vuga and made from a glazed ceramic block manufactured locally by a small pottery workshop using a technique employed in the manufacture of traditional ceramic stoves. Two young architects working under the name Studio Moste explore crafts and their interaction with design, so they hand make every piece they design. This time they bring their deconstructed drawer unit No. 2 and cutting boards made of scrap wood.

Another group of designers upcycled waste materials and transformed them into valuable, high-quality products. Cup by Aklih studio is a handy lamp, 3D-printed using a mixture of biodegradable plastic and wood. The jewellery cum decoration Gift of the Future is made of recycled silver obtained from electronic waste, which fits with the Floios studio philosophy that they are not designers, but “foragers and seekers.” On the other hand, the Donar company seeks to save the world from plastic waste with chairs like Nicoless and Collodi. All their chairs answer the human need to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet and use waste as an industrial material of the future. The redesign is part of the new philosophy of socially responsible and sustainable design.

The exhibition The Future of Living is a  promotional event organised in the framework of the Slovenian presidency to the Council of the European Union.

The Centre for Creativity is co-funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Slovenia.

The goal of every brand is to create a networking of the target audience, but in the flood of competitors and approaches, it’s hard to find a recipe for success that would turn a passive audience into loyal advocates. For a brand to be able to position itself confidently and successfully on the market, it must first truly understand and know its customers, produce such messages for them that will encourage dialogue and then give their communication a suitable personality and find the brand’s voice.

We will get to know who, what and how to communicate as a brand at an interactive e-workshop with Masha Mazi.

The workshop will discuss in more detail:

  • definition of the target audience based on facts and not guesses,
  • ways in which and where this target audience can be found,
  • practical setting of key messages and
  • permeating key messages with the personality and language of the brand in your cases.

DESIGN DINING: project presentation

22 Apr 2021

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

We’re inviting you to watch an online presentation of the Design Dining project on Thursday, 22 April 2021 at 11am through live streaming on our Facebook page.

Our chef at Ljubljana’s restaurant Tabar, Jakob Pintar, will also join the conversation and together we’ll explain where this project will take us, who will be a part of it as design or business mentors and what kind of content will be created in the following months. There will also be some time dedicated to you questions about the programme or open call.

Deadline for the submission of concept designs and prototypes for the limited edition design pieces that will constitute new Slovenian Design Tableware, is 18 May 2021. More about the open call and application process you can find here.

This open call is launched under the programme DESIGN DINING: Slovenian Tableware Design, which is carried out by the Museum of Architecture and Design and the Centre for Creativity under the auspices of EU Distributed Design Market Platform. We will select up to 10 designers who will receive financial incentives to design a new product, to be used as a table setting, and also produce it (as a limited series). The selected tableware series will be presented at pop-up dinners and exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad.

‘Being a chef myself and always on the lookout for new ideas on how to present my dishes, I am very much looking forward to this project. Instead of once white dinner plates we now have unique design products of ceramic artists, carpenters and other craftspeople. I think it a brilliant idea to give an artist the opportunity to feel unencumbered by how their products will end up being used. This is the way to make products that transcend the boundaries of what is commonplace, expected or comfortable. I look forward to unusual designs and unusual materials that will allow me, too, to take that leap into the unknown.’ – Jakob Pintar, chef

This time on Skillshare, we will talk about connecting science, technology and art to achieve social change, and the role of the artist as an intermediary. What does “co-creating the future in a pragmatic way” mean? Our guest will be Miha Turšič, an artist, designer and researcher focused on the development of the arts and humanities in outer space.

At the beginning of his career, Miha Turšič co-founded the design studio Asobi, where he worked as a creative director. He continued his journey as a co-founder of the art group Postgravityart, where he is still involved in the development of art in outer space.

As a by-product of artistic practice, he also co-founded the Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies (KSEVT), through which he enables research of artistic, cultural and humanistic practices in cooperation with space institutions. In recent years, he has been working in Waag (NL), where he runs the Open Space Lab and develops new interdisciplinary research and development methods. He is also active in the European initiative S + T + ARTS, which enables the development of new forms of technological growth based on the integration of artistic practices in the manufacturing industry, robotics and new media.

The interdisciplinary integration in the fields of science, technology and the arts has immense potential for the innovations that will be necessary for the social, environmental and economic challenges that the near future brings.

A fresh selection of contemporary Slovenian design production, local materials and sustainable principles!

The presented products and services combine creativity with a business vision. We’ve highlighted stories of small brands that express functionality, a passion for life and nature, innovative ways of using local materials (wood in particular), and new production methods based on regional craftsmanship and advanced sustainable production technologies.

Over the past two years, a set of 90 products that have received the “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence was assembled, which in many ways well represents the efforts of the Centre for Creativity, which operates within the Museum for Architecture and Design – to connect, promote, support and develop the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia and more actively connect it with the economy, science and education. The selected products look to and forecast the future of living, where raw materials are no longer available in abundance, where it is necessary to rationalize the methods of production, use human resources, and bring the products closer to a new generation of users who want and need custom solutions. These are to be found in technologically advanced and innovative manufacturing, which manufacturers and designers combine with a love of life and nature.
