The Center for Creativity, as part of the Skillshare program, presents a fashion piece by Peter Movrin, one of Slovenia’s most prominent fashion designers, at the Museum of Architecture and Design. Movrin has established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary fashion, known for his bold, oversized constructions, artisanal approach, and passion for fashion. He completed his studies in Fashion Design at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering in Ljubljana (NTF) with the diploma project FranzMadonna, which received exceptional acclaim and positioned him in the international design field; the creation was notably worn by Lady Gaga.

The piece originates from the graduation collection FranzMadonna, in which Peter Movrin explored the heritage of Gothic art, an era marked by God’s excellency, people’s humility and the strong religious motives of Christianity, and transformed its expressive architectural aesthetics into contemporary silhouettes. Rays of light were introduced into the materials through notches and shapes extending outside the body, creating a contrast between powerful leather details and a light and poetic feeling that softens the collection and adds a sense of romanticism. Covered faces and layers of dark material evoke mystery and invite curiosity, encouraging us to investigate forms that reveal themselves through body movement. Perhaps beneath it all there is a trace of hope.

At the December talk in the Skillshare series, we are hosting Peter Movrin, one of the most renowned Slovenian fashion designers with an exceptional international career. Movrin has established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary fashion, known for his bold, oversized constructions, artisanal approach, and deep passion for fashion. His talent was recognised early on by trend forecaster Li Edelkoort, and his collection FranzMadonna attracted strong international attention. He has received numerous awards, and his work has been worn by stars such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Zaha Hadid, Pippa Middleton, Björk, and many others. Throughout his extensive career, he has collaborated with the team of the Hunger Games film franchise, as well as with Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Aesop, Cartier, the luxury groups Richemont and Mayhoola, Alber Elbaz (AZ Factory), Bottega Veneta, and numerous other names.

Movrin will speak about the challenges of the global fashion world, the intersection of creativity and business, and building a career guided by a strong personal vision. The conversation will be moderated by columnist and publicist Urša Jerkič. As part of the programme, you can also attend individual consultations with the guest in the morning.

Before and after the talk, a pop-up featuring fashion designers and brands will be on view, including: Anselma, Natasahrupic, Ksenija Baraga, Jona Bednjanec, Monika Colja, Anja Medle, Kiss the Future, Volja, Petja Zorec, and others. MATERIAL BAR at Milan Design Week

7. apr–13. apr 2025

| 11:00–19:00

Alcova, Villa Bagatti Valsecchi

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

At this year’s Milan Design Week, taking place between April 7 and April 13, 2025, the Slovenian curatorial group will present the project MATERIAL BAR.

The curatorial team—Katarina Dekleva, Rok Oblak, and Bor Pungerčič—who are also active in the fields of design and architecture, have selected 11 exhibitors for the presentation: Anselma, From Gaja, Hiša Mandrova, Nika Ravnik, Pjorkkala, Toasted Furniture, Prostorož, Miha Šajina, Salto Dionys, Gobnjak, and Gin Brin.

We are also organizing a guided tour of the Slovenian space MATERIAL BAR at Milan Design Week 2025 and a get-together with the curators on Tuesday, 8 April 2025 at 2 pm at Alcova, Villa Bagatti Valsecchi.

Programme, 2 pm-4 pm:

  • tor of the Slovenian space MATERIAL BAR with curators
  • presentation of design practices: Pjorkkala, Toasted Furniture, Salto Dionys, From Gaja and Miha Šajina.
  • A social event with the exhibitors, the curatorial team and live act Miha Šajina aka Shekuza

THE CURATORIAL CONCEPT

Titled MATERIAL BAR, the presentation departs from the traditional design exhibition format. It moves beyond the simple display of products as the outcome of the design process and instead focuses on design as a holistic activity that encompasses work processes, thought processes, materials, environment, and relationships. Designers are understood as part of a community. The curatorial role is seen as a (co-)creator in establishing an open, progressive, and responsible design production and society. The curators approach their role in a creative and productive manner, giving the main voice to the selected exhibitors. Visitors are engaged directly, experiencing not only the visual aspects of design but also its auditory, physical, sensory, and tactile dimensions.

The focus of the presentation is on the design practices, inviting visitors to participate and explore collaboratively. Material Bar is envisioned as a public social space—a bar with a central countertop or workbench, where the design process unfolds. The space is framed by a colorful vertical mosaic of materials and products, while at its core stands a two-level countertop, allowing for observation on one side and participation on the other. Located on the first floor of a historic villa, the pavilion extends to an outdoor terrace, creating a new public space for rest and social interaction, symbolically opening up to the local community. By shifting away from product presentations, Material Bar highlights the hands-on work and design processes of the eleven selected local design practices.

The MATERIAL BAR installation will be presented within Alcova. For the third consecutive year, Alcova is expanding beyond the center of Milan, establishing itself in the town of Varedo, emphasizing the Milan Design Week’s importance for the entire region. The Slovenian showcase will be on display at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, a historic countryside villa designed and built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In this richly layered architectural setting, contemporary design ideas will intertwine with historical details and protected cultural heritage.

BIO28: Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower?

21 Nov 2024 –6 Apr 2025

MAO

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

The Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) and the Centre for Creativity (CzK) proudly present the 28th edition of BIO Ljubljana, one of the world’s oldest design biennials, celebrating 60 years since the first exhibition. Curated by Alexandra Midal, BIO28 Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower? brings together global designers, artists, and thinkers to explore the relationship between art, design, and the coded language of flowers. This edition reflects on themes of feminism, secrecy, and resistance through floriography. Alongside the exhibition and five production platforms, BIO28 includes talks, workshops, and city-wide events, with highlights at ISIS Gallery and Mala Galerija in Ljubljana.

Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower? exhibition
Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower? is not merely an exhibition but also a multi-faceted manifesto that operates through back-and-forths between the present and the past, as well as between art, design and cinema. It is dedicated to the science of secrecy and, more specifically, to the coded language of flowers – or floriography – in the service of feminism. During the Victorian era, the popularity of floriography gave flowers the power of symbolic communication of morals and feelings. In opposition to modern cryptology – full of machines and decoding – the secret language of flowers demands listening.

The fragile and charming floral motifs and their metonymy of the woman-flower also form a relationship with the natural sciences, which constrain women to a decorative role. The same motifs also use guile and deceit to transmit information. Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower? explores how the arts have embraced this double language in the fight for societal changes. Just as media philosopher Vilém Flusser defines design as “the founding intention of all culture, of all civilization” and does not hesitate to call the designer a “cunning plotter laying his traps”, floriography proposes a form of resistance that hides behind the seemingly neutralized and seductive banality of floral language. Combining aesthetics and feminism, flowers take on the role of a double agents: like spies, they work to both provide and conceal information to better serve interests and deceive enemies.

The exhibition examines how the floriographic ruse manifests itself in works by Margaret Watts Hughes and Loïe Fuller, or in Rosa Luxemburg’s herbarium, with which – from prison – she led the revolutionary Marxist group Spartacus League. It shows how it manifests in the photographs of forget-me-nots projected by Ray and Charles Eames to undermine American government propaganda in Moscow. We also see it in the disguising of political and military leaders’ identities with the names of Middle Eastern flora – a language established by Fadwa Hassoun – or in the elixir created specifically for this exhibition by Marguerite Humeau.

Production platform

BIO28: Double Agent: Do You Speak Flower? features a production platform developed with the Centre for Creativity, showcasing interdisciplinary teams mentored by renowned creatives. Following teams explore the coded language of flowers and their connection to marginalized groups:

  • Lures’s Time by matali crasset, who views beeswax as a product of both the plant and animal worlds, explores how humans fit into this scenario. The project is rooted in Slovenian flora, with beeswax serving as the central element.
  • Melting Through by the XenoScapers Collective combines beeswax with digital projections to explore the grotesque qualities of matter in hyperspace.
  • (Un)wowen tales, mentored by Dimitri Zephir and Florian Dach, with production by Anna Odulinska and Nika van Berkel, juxtaposes Slovenia’s lace heritage with the erasure of stateless individuals in 1991, challenging ideas of nationality and belonging.
  • I’ll be Poppyby El Último Grito explores place and fiction in new creative geographies. The project creates a short film on the themes of Double Agent and floriography, replacing the exhibition catalogue and incorporating curatorial texts and works from the biennale.
  • Design for Society: 60 Years of the Biennial of Design – A documentary film, produced by OSM Films with the help of Maja Šuštarič, explores the 60-year evolution of the Biennial of Design (BIO), focusing on its development, key moments, and shifts in design.
  • Movement for Public Speechby Prostorož mentored by Polonca Lovšin, presents Murmuring Orchids, an installation using orchids as metaphors for women in precarious housing.
  • Cattleya by YASA Collective, mentored by Grashina Gabelmann and Michelle Phillips, reclaims the floral metaphor in Don’t Teach a Flower How to Bloom. Through posters and a web platform, the project deconstructs femininity stereotypes, revealing the resilience of flowers and women.

RogExpo

20 Nov 2024–8 Feb 2025

Center ROG

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

The exhibition of what was produced at Center Rog over the last year might surprise many, as it is neither a typical design exhibition nor a museum or gallery presentation such as ones we are used to. It includes a colourful collection of objects created by both amateur and professional designers. Selected innovative designs from our project studios and residential programme are displayed alongside bold achievements developed by young users of the Mladi Rog (Young at Rog) programme and the wonderful group products that were created in the relaxed atmosphere of meetups – from lace making to experimenting with biomaterials.

The exhibition curators, Alja Fir and Anja Radović, based their selection on the makers’ concept of creativity which can, as part of everyday life, be developed anywhere, and nurtured with practical experiences, curiosity, ingenuity and cooperation. This kind of perception of creativity includes everyone, regardless of their social status, gender, age, education or cultural background.

In doing so our theme focuses on the heritage of our ancestors. Why? We live in a time of rapid climate changes and growing political and military conflicts, the global effects of which can also be felt in our own local surroundings. The question we ask ourselves is whether we still have the right skills and abilities to address these changes. Perhaps we need to take a step back and consider how the values and experiences of our ancestors might help us.

We have known for a long time that cultural structures are deep and multifaceted, expressed through our thoughts, words, actions, and also through how we create and use objects: how we wear clothes, how we build homes, when we wear jewelry, and why we decorate vessels that we use for cooking.

The exhibited objects tackle climate change impacts on natural resources. They also address knowledge loss experienced when leaving one’s cultural context, exploring ways to support immigrant communities in preserving and sharing their heritage. Some objects showcase the shift from traditional crafts, like pottery, to digital manufacturing, possibly democratizing production and reviving ancient local practices. Lastly, group-created pieces remind us of the joy and connectivity of creating together, regardless of differing perspectives or skills.

Participating at the exhibition are 29 creators or projects. They were supported in their work by 28 technicians from Center Rog together with a team of 10 project managers and administrators.

Intertwined

10 Dec 2024–14 Jan 2025

Museum of Applied Art, Belgrade

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

As a partner of MADE IN Platform we kindly invite you to an exhibition, offering a critical reflection on the role of crafts in society today. It features carefully selected practitioners, craftspeople, artists, and creatives whose work highlights the critical role of contemporary crafts in shaping a sustainable and just future. Their practices embody the values and innovations needed to rethink traditional methods while addressing present challenges.

Exhibition opens the conversation of the meaning of historical transformation, of gender, generational and utility transfer of knowledge and its role in envisioning new futures. Intentionally, the focus is placed on the meanings and possibilities that the notions of circular, sustainable and adaptability have in a locally specific context, with a wish to provide mindful translation of their meaning for the benefit of all. Unexpected forms, materials and techniques intertwine and transform what we know of crafts, heritage, and their contemporary possibilities at the crossroads of new needs, prospects, and societal demands. Transformation is understood as a necessity, with its actual path yet to be determined.

Exhibition is featuring works by / from:

  • Jovanović Atelier, Miloš Jovanović, stonemason
Miloš Jovanović’s work in masoning begins with sketching and precise delayering of marble, followed by detailed edge grinding and polishing to prevent deterioration.
  • Stanišić Atelier, stained glass making, restauration and installing
From sketching to kiln, Stanišić Atelier transforms glass into vivid works of art, with every piece shaped by temperature and pigment in the furnace.
  • Vitanov Sisters, Marina Vitanov-Jevtić and Danijela Vitanov, goldsmiths
The Vitanov sisters create one-of-a-kind jewelry using a distinctive handcraft technique, never mass-producing their designs.
  • Aleksandar Todorović, wool dyeing
Aleksandar Todorović is a professional conservator at the “Staro selo” open-air museum in Sirogojno, where the maintenance of buildings and objects is conducted by using traditional and old crafts as much as possible.
  • Mina Kaljević (Twenty Five Market), tapestry and tufting
Mina’s rug-making is a vibrant mix of tapestry needle and hand-tufting “gun” techniques, each bringing its own flair—sturdy knots or fluffy, untamed textures.
  • Rush Stuff – Pavle Nećakov and Maja Đurović, rush braiding
The dried rush is braided by knotting one side of the future braid to the wall or a table, while the free side is braided in one, two, three, or four thread braids.
  • IMGGE
Group for Eco-Biotechnology and Drug Development of the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering is focused on developing eco-sustainable processes based on microorganisms and microbial enzymes.
  • SOMA (White Lemur)
They create immune-supporting supplements and eco-friendly alternatives like BiosporinTM, a sustainable substitute for expanded polystyrene, using agricultural waste from mushroom cultivation.
  • The “Interwined” workshop
All prototypes were made in accordance with circular production, without applying hazardous chemical glues, while some were also based on recycling previously used materials.
  • Squaring The Circle (From Dust to Dust We Return)
Presenting the results of the collaboration between artist James Earley and Stanišić Atelier, created during the Glass: From Heritage to Circular Economy residency. This residency highlights traditional craftsmanship while addressing the challenges facing the glass industry in the Western Balkans, with the resulting privacy screen serving as a testament to this innovative creative process.

Tracing Topographies is a three day design workshop in which the participants will investigate the possibilities of urban environments as sights of craft. Looking at the history of Kropa, who’s economy, social structure, culture and architecture were all shaped by craft, the participants will seek to reverse these processes and use the urban landscape of Ljubljana to develop individual projects.

Through group discussions and one on one tutoring the participants will learn/develop a multidisciplinary, conceptual approach to design, as well as learn the basics of working with metal sheets, embossing and engraving. Through experimentation with different techniques, the participants will be asked to discuss the conscious choices of their design process, as well as the conceptual and technical considerations involved.

Knowledge of design and making is not mandatory, but preferred. In the workshop you will be working with your hands and use light tools (hammers, drills,…). All of the materials and tools will be provided.

The workshop is part of MADE IN platform,  a research, design and heritage platform that proposes new collaborative practices and knowledge exchange between the traditional craftspeople and contemporary designers.

Made in partners: Museum of Architecture and Design – MAO (Ljubljana, Slovenia) (coordinator), Center Rog (Ljubljana, Slovenia), City Museum Zenica – MGZ (Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina), Drugo more (Rijeka, Croatia), Museum of Decorative Arts, part of the State Art Collections of Dresden – SKD (Dresden, Germany), Museum of Arts and Crafts – MUO (Zagreb, Croatia), Oaza (Zagreb, Croatia), Creative Hub Nova Iskra (Belgrade, Serbia), Passa ao Futuro – PAF (Lisbon, Portugal), and University of Applied Sciences Zwickau – WHZ (Schneeberg, Germany).

VODA: From essential element to inspiring design

20–29 Sep 2024

Vienna, Austria

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Witty cleaning tools, elegant bottles, innovative clay filters and flocks of flying plants: the unique collection brings together a wide range of products inspired by the element of water (“voda” is the Slovene word for water). Each piece celebrates the harmony of aesthetics and functionality in its own way—when you see them all in one place, you will also be able to see water (so special and yet ordinary at the same time) with new eyes and through fresh design solutions.

In addition to the fact that it is a fascinating and thought-provoking exhibition, “VODA is also a kind of insider’s guide to the state of “contemporary Slovenian product design; the exhibition thus presents Ajda Bertok, Lara Bohinc, Rok Oblak, Tanja Pak, Darja Malešič, Katjuša Kranjc & Rok Kuhar, Urška Sadar, Soft Baroque, Hana Tavčar, David Tavčar, Izadora Verlič, EQUA, Kolpasan, Prapra and Pjorkkala.

The exhibition is curated by Design Corner Ljubljana, a bright new spot on the map of Slovenian creativity, as it presents what’s new on the design scene week after week. With its activities, Design Corner proudly presents the design results of the city and thus turns Ljubljana into one of the most interesting centers of European design.

Exhibition

CASTLE | concepts, objects, spaces

13 Jun–27 Okt 2024

MAO

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Nestled between the many layers of Fužine Castle’s history, the collection of the Museum of Architecture and Design is an eclectic yet intrinsically coherent body of documents and objects related to space and materiality. Drawing on the idea of a transhistorical museum, the exhibition Castle → Concepts, Objects, Spaces recognizes history as a stratified amalgamation of narrative strands between which it seeks intersections, concentrations of meaning, reflections, and echoes.

The confrontation between the castle and museum objects does not put a spotlight on the building’s history but focuses in the first place on the life that transpired there, the shifts it provoked, and the new mindset, knowledge, and innovations it has bred through centuries in cahoots with the surrounding nature. This trans-historicity can also be understood as a quest for the timelessness of museum artefacts and the castle’s walls that nevertheless does not seek to deny the material nature of their becoming. Through understanding of the collection, and of the castle as its current location, as an open and fluid time-space entity, the current moment is embedded in the continuity of history, thus becoming empowered and eager to ascertain the inevitable: how to go on from here?

The exhibition layout conforms to the elements of the space. The moat, field, room, tower, river, and courtyard are not mere anonymous venues, but actively co-create the experience of the exhibition. Museum objects, especially the lesser known ones, speak of the concepts shaped by the life in the castle and its spatial presence, but are nevertheless universal, omnipresent and always relevant. In the exhibition, they are communicated through the themes of occupations and liberations, strategies of self-sufficiency, an uncanny domesticity, knowledge production, materiality in motion, and intersections of public and private.

The presented concepts, objects, and spaces derive from their time, but are not defined by it; their juxtaposition inspires new relationships and dialogues between objects, architecture, individuals, and the public. New reading reactivates these objects and introduces a certain tension between them: in new spatial constellations, torn out of their original context and function, they open as yet unexplored meanings that are inherent and topical to our times. More than a static site of the past, the museum and its location stand and serve as active agents in the production of contemporary creativity and culture.

The exhibition also presents products created with the support of CzK as part of Distributed Design – Crafting Futures:

And products created with the support of CzK as part of Distributed Design – Design Dining:

Among the products are also some products from the BIO production platforms Coincidence Finder – a continuation of the project called Iskalnik. The Ratio product from the first edition of the Made In project and some products from BIO 50 are also presented.

Crafting Futures

13 Dec 2023–10 Mar 2024

MAO

EXHIBITION OPENING: WEDNESDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2023 AT 19:00

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Centre for Creativity has launched the second open call for co-productions of limited-edition series as part of the Distributed Design platform. Under the call Connecting Contemporary Design, Craft and Trades, 10 works by Slovenian creators were selected to receive financial incentive and mentoring in order to design a new product or visibly enhance an existing one for the purpose of presentation at the interinstitutional exhibition Triennial of Handicrafts and the Crafting Futures exhibition.

The selected products represent an intersection of adaptations of handcrafting symbolisms and techniques with conceptual and social approaches. Handcrafting techniques hold values and worth for contemporary creators, contrasting with generic products of serial industrial production by achieving high quality and traceable production origins. One crucial characteristic of products based on handcrafting techniques is their materiality which is most often associated with ecological concerns. These creators, critical of exploitative resource extraction models, propose processes based on locally sourced materials and their sustainable cycles.

The exhibited products address the current theme of connecting contemporary design production with the rich cultural crafts and trades heritage as a source of inspiration and ideas for modern, innovative, sustainable, and local production based on natural materials, traditional knowledge, and skills. The exhibition aims to highlight the adaptable potential of crafts and trades and their relevance for today’s changing social and environmental situations, thereby contributing to their understanding in the context of the 21st-century time and society.

EXHIBITION

Triennial of Craftsmanship

26 Sep - 19 Nov 2023

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

We are happy to announce, that the ten projects chosen in the open call Connecting Modern Design, Handicrafts and Crafts, are now on display at the Triennial of Craftsmanship in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška until 19 November 2023. The curators of the exhibition are Dr. Cvetka Požar (Museum of Architecture and Design), Dr. Tanja Roženbergar (Slovene Etnographic Museum) and Maja Vardjan (Museum of Architecture and Design).

Craftsmanship exhibitions in Slovenj Gradec have a rich tradition and are one of the most important events for presenting handmade products. Since the first exhibition of domestic and artistic crafts in 1977, the social, cultural, economic, and environmental conditions have changed significantly. The new edition of the Triennial of Craftsmanship reflects these altered conditions in the field of craft cultures and highlights the relevance of such processes. The exhibition contributes to the understanding of the craft sectors in the context of the 21st century’s time and society.

The exhibition features 38 products selected through a public call for the Triennial of Craftsmanship and Crafts, organized by a consortium of partners, as well as 10 products chosen through a public call for the Integration of Contemporary Design, Craftsmanship, and Crafts, announced within the Distributed Design Platform by the Centre for Creativity. These products will also be presented at the Museum of Architecture and Design at the end of 2023.

The 10 chosen Slovenian creators have, with the help of financial incentives by Centre for Creativity/MAO and Distributed Design Platform, designed a new product or made a significant update to an existing one.

Jury prizes were awarded at the Triennial of Craftsmanship and we are glad to say, that two of our chosen projects got awarded. Čebelino (by Rok Oblak and Luka Pleskovič) received the award of the expert committee and Oreika (by Lara Baler and Boris Ouček) received special recognition of the expert committee.

Four months ago, we temporarily set up our premises in the Cukrarna Palace, where we installed Created in Slovenia, an exhibition presenting the Centre for Creativity’s operation over the previous  almost five-year period. At the same time, as part of the BIO 27 accompanying programme, we organised three international exhibitions which aimed to explore and confront the industrial and technocentric with alternative narratives and mythologies. Before we wrap up the exhibitions, we invite you to join us for the Sunday at the Cukrarna Palace event, which will see young Slovenian artists present their fresh design collections, a tour of the neighbouring Sever Parking Garage with the Nonument Group, and several guided tours of the Created in Slovenia exhibition and the BIO 27 accompanying programme throughout the day.

11:00-15:00 | POP-UP FAIR

From ceramics to fashion accessories, there’s something unique for every home and every wardrobe! Participating artists:

Brencha | Brinas | Fuga | Gentle Power | JNŽ studio | Jona Bednjanec | Juha studio | Nika Ravnik | Pirate Piška | Toasted Furniture and others

12:00-15:00 | Nonument Group: TGH-68: Nothing Can Happen Here, audio drive-in through the Sever Parking Garage

The characteristic feature of the Sever Parking Garage, one of the masterpieces of the architect Savin Sever, is its distinct duality: it is a revered example of quality 1960s architecture and at the same time a neglected and “useless” building. With an audio drive through the garage, the Nonument Group will draw attention to its specific structure: the building is not only architecturally fascinating, but despite its supposedly problematic present already full of vital content and individual improvisations. Read openly enough, its specific structure, such as it is now, offers the changing city around it a platform for new, technologically contemporary, social, and city-forming content.

You’ll be driven individually by taxi up the spiral ramp, thinking of this unusual garage as a universe in itself.

The Nonument Group’s intervention is based on field observation and interviews with garage users, employees, and professionals. The audio walk is based on the story “The Library of Babel” by Jorge Luis Borges.

The audio ride lasts 20 minutes and is in Slovenian. For organisation reasons, please send your applications to: hana.vardjan@czk.si.

This year, the Nonument Group participated in the CZK partnership network with the Field Events project.

Produced by the Centre for Creativity and MoTA – Museum of Transitory Arts.

The project is a co-production with the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and part of the pre-event celebrations for the opening of the Cukrarna Palace.

11:00, 13:00, 14:00 | Guided tours of Created in Slovenia and BIO27 Satellite programme

Guided tours of the Created in Slovenia exhibition and BIO 27 accompanying programme. The tours will be hosted by Anja Zorko, Head of the Centre for Creativity, Maja Kovačič, Project Manager at the Centre for Creativity, and Aleksandar Mišković (Vidic Grohar Architects).

Join us in front of the Cukrarna Palace and see the exhibition Created in Slovenia one last time!

During Milano Design Week Centre for Creativity (CzK) will present innovative products by Slovenian designers who break with the established, albeit often bad social habits. Through the products hosted at this exhibition the designers offer a critique of the existing economic and social systems as well as a different perspective on production. They bring new uses, new functionalities and materiality as well as a concern for healthy environments and society. They share a desire to reveal the background behind the product development process and the idea of using good design to build a community. They emphasise the value of combining digital and manual work, with the latter serving as a tool for people’s psychosocial empowerment.

During the Milano Design Week our exhibition will be part of TORTONA ROCKS venue at Via Tortona 31. We will present a selection of twenty-two products that have been awarded the “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence. The projects have been selected from an open call for participation by the committee of experts: designer Luka Stepan, service designer Ana Kyra Bekš, architect and designer Primož Jeza, curator for architecture and design Maja Vardjan, architect and head of programme at CzK Mika Cimolini.

The exhibition is organised in cooperation between the Centre for Creativity/MAO and the General Consulate of Slovenia in Milano.

The presented designers are looking for ways to reconnect people into a community, motivate them to look up from their screens, and to start socialising again. Their message is this: after we’ve been separated by the pandemic, discrimination, racisms and nationalisms, mistrust of state institutions, economic stratification, and climate change, it is design that can bring us back together.

So see you in new times!

On Friday, 27 May 2022, the Cukrarna Palace in Ljubljana will host the opening   of Created in Slovenia, an exhibition of the Museum of Architecture and Design aimed at presenting the achievements of the Centre for Creativity as well as selected programmes developed under its auspices during the first period of the Centre’s operation. The exhibition provides an insight into the work and projects of the Slovenian creative community as they change the domestic and international landscape, creating a different, inclusive, and sustainable future.

In its almost five years of operation, CzK has organised more than 500 programmes aimed at developing the sector, and recorded 248,000 participations of creators, creative businesses, self-employed freelancers, private and non-governmental organisations, and other visitors. Of these, almost 500 companies and several thousand creators were involved in specific programmes. Supported by the Ministry’s calls for proposals and by the CzK they are developing over 200 innovative products and services, maintaining over 50 collaborations between creators and companies from other economy sectors, and are funding 62 new jobs in creative enterprises. To date, over 100 Slovenian creators and entrepreneurs were represented at more than 60 exhibitions and events in 24 countries around the world

The current exhibition, Created in Slovenia, looks back at the first period of the platform’s operation and presents a selection of some of the Centre for Creativity’s most important programmes. The CzK, together with its established partner network and many other partners, connects and supports thousands of creators, artists, self-employed freelancers in culture, creative entrepreneurs, organisations, associations, and institutions across different areas of the sector. On display are the works and projects of a vibrant and creative community whose common denominator is its capacity to create change in society and to think differently, inclusively, and sustainably.

As part of BIO27 Supervernacular, whose production platform and accompanying programme is produced by the Centre for Creativity, the Curkrarna Palace will host three different international exhibitions, The Ideal Eating Experience (Kathrina Dankl in collaboration with Vienna Design Week and Vienna Business Agency) The School of the Untold (Design Campus in collaboration with German Design Graduates and the Goethe Institute) and DNA of Things (Marcin Rusak), which deal with alternatives to the existing systems and show how an experimental and interdisciplinary process enables creative research and innovation, making social and entrepreneurial innovation happen in the first place.

The Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in 2017, at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, established the Centre for Creativity (CzK) – an interdisciplinary platform aimed at the development and promotion of the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia, as well as its integration with the economy and other sectors. Together with the Ministry of Culture’s calls for proposals aimed at promoting creative industries, it supports projects that emerge at the intersection of different creative fields and entrepreneurship and contribute to economic and social progress.

Super Vernaculars, the theme for BIO27, explores a growing and ambitious movement that takes inspiration from vernacular design and architecture to shape a radical vision for a more responsive and resilient future. Alongside the main exhibition at The Museum of Architecture and Design and other commissions within the city centre, we are showcasing three different international design shows as part of the Satellite programme which intends to further explore and juxtapose alternative narratives and mythologies to the industrial and technocentric.

Aiming to bring together practitioners and thinkers who challenge value systems and our conventional understanding of linear production and the relationship we have with the perishable present and the unknown future, we have selected projects from Austria, Germany and Poland that range from established to emerging artists, designers and design collectives that all make connections across larger cultural and societal conversations.

Each project invites visitors to explore important topics such as the food industry and rethinking our eating habits, reconsidering material production, and a poetic and scientific investigation of the dialogue between humans and the natural world. Focusing on the values in society today and acknowledging the need for change, these exhibits are inspirational starting points that pave the way towards a sustainable revolution:

  • DNA of Things (Marcin Rusak)
  • The Ideal Eating Experience (Kathrina Dankl in collaboration with Vienna Design Week, Vienna Business Agency and Austrian Culture Forum)
  • The School of the Untold (Design Campus in collaborations with German Design Graduates and Goethe Institut)

DNA of Things

DNA of Things marks a decisive step forward in the field of scientific research applied to Marcin Rusak’s creative method, linking it back to one of Rusak’s very first investigations. In the Flower Monster project (2013–2014), the possible implications of genetic mutation applied to natural evolution were studied. Such a contrast marks a new dialogue between man and the natural world – one that can annul the limits imposed on our materiality by the factor of time. In this exhibition, the stages of Rusak’s ongoing research are presented as a Living Archive, a review of techniques and experiments crystallising deterioration, celebrating transformation, and reducing entire processes down to a smell or a material. The Unnatural Practice manifesto has ignited the studio’s collective conscience, leading to a more pronounced dialogue between science and technology, human and non-human.

The Ideal Eating Experience

Everyone needs to eat. But how? In the Urban Food & Design project, Vienna Design Week, together with the Vienna Business Agency, demonstrates which roles design can play in the production, distribution, and consumption of food. The project curated by design researcher Kathrina Dankl invites us to playfully explore local and international positions on the subject in the familiar setting of a shopping situation, to try something new – and to possibly even alter a few of our habits. This “supermarket of ideas” has now travelled from Vienna to Ljubljana in collaboration with Austrian Culture Forum and, in keeping with the theme of Super Vernaculars, employs a scoring system that offers information on the ecological impact of our eating habits and the food industry. Appropriate solutions are served up on the side!

THE SCHOOL OF THE UNTOLD

Today, designers, architects and artists can be critical agents in the transformation of global systems. As the earth's resources are being depleted, we are facing an urgent need to revisit our knowledge and education of material production. This year the Design Campus Summer School in Dresden, Germany (18 July – 26 August 2022), will be radically rooted in an expansive understanding of the realities that shape today’s world. The three projects on display are awardees at The School of the Untold, coproduced by the Goethe Institute Ljubljana in collaboration with German Design Graduates, a network of design schools and alumni hosted by the German Design Council. The graduates were selected because of their affinity for materials and the utopic potential of their final projects and will also receive scholarship for the Design Campus in Dresden.

BIO27 Super Vernaculars

26 May - 29 Sep 2022

MAO, Ljubljana

Curator: Jane Withers; assistant: Ria Hawthorn; Head of BIO27: Anja Radovič

The 27th edition of BIO Ljubljana (BIO27), the oldest and one of the leading design biennials in the world, opening on 26 May under the curatorship of Jane Withers, brings together forward-thinking and environmentally conscious designers, architects, thinkers and researchers from around the globe.

OPENING: May 26, 2022

Based at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) and created in cooperation with, the Centre for Creativity Slovenia (CzK), the Biennial comprises the Super Vernaculars exhibition; a presentation of the five production platform commissions; and a vibrant programme of talks, workshops and engaging events. A city-wide satellite programme of exhibits and events will be announced in April.

  • Introduction to the Super Vernaculars theme

The introductory section of the BIO27 exhibition is staged as a Wunderkammer of objects and ideas that illuminate the beliefs underpinning this contemporary movement. Drawing on works from Slovenian national heritage and beyond, it shows how vernacular practices inspired designers throughout the 20th century and were often an unacknowledged element of modern design. Setting the scene are works by Enzo Mari and Bruno Munari (Italy), alongside Marjetica Potrč (Slovenia), and Adam Štěch (Czech Republic).

  • Negotiating Traditions

Through the works of Carolien Niebling (the Netherlands), Ant Studio (India), Alicja Bielawska + Centrala (Poland), Francesca Sarti of Arabeschi di Latte (Italy), and others, Biennial visitors have an opportunity to explore how contemporary designers are reimagining, adapting and subverting traditional ideas and deep-rooted practices to address contemporary needs and challenges. Super Vernaculars’ third exhibition section showcases various design processes and systems proposed as alternatives to the centralised infrastructures that accommodate our modern lives and, in many cases, are no longer able to sustainably support the requirements of growing populations in a time of climate change. Projects such as Marjan van Aubel’s (the Netherlands) solar panels, new material research by Atelier LUMA (France), and water systems by Ooze Architects (the Netherlands) reveal hidden local-scale processes and rethink them in terms of circular, nature-based systems. Exhibiting at BIO27 are the NGO project Isla Urbana (Mexico), Girjegumpi Sami Library (Norway), Kamikatsu Zero Waste Village and Centre (Japan) and INDUS by Bio-ID Lab at the Bartlett School of Architecture (UK), all of whom present human- and community-centric research and projects that foster social justice and healthy, flourishing communities.

  •  BIO27 Production Platform

BIO27 Super Vernaculars’ production platform produced in cooperation with CzK, features five Slovenian interdisciplinary teams mentored by internationally acclaimed mentors to tackle compelling problems of local communities and the environment. Design collective Krater in dialogue with Atelier LUMA (France) and BC Materials (Belgium) is developing ongoing research into rammed earth architecture to create a teahouse that is situated on the crater-like construction site in the heart of Ljubljana occupied by Krater. Delving into the ‘world of grains’, team Robida.plus based in remote Alpine village Topolò and mentored by designer and food futurist Carolien Niebling (the Netherlands) is drawing on Slovenia’s rich cultural, agricultural and culinary heritage to redesign the Slovenian tradition of buckwheat use. Pjorkkala, the team mentored by Shneel Malik (India), an architect, biodesign researcher and social entrepreneur, is addressing the problem of pollution in natural water sources in Slovenia by creating prototypes for local, nature-based solutions. Adam Štěch, an architectural historian and co-founder of the creative group OKOLO (Czech Republic) is mentoring Garnitura to communicate the architectural legacy of the renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik to new audiences by drawing on the architect’s profoundly human vision for the city of Ljubljana.  Futuring is undertaking an environmental audit of the Super Vernaculars biennial and is guiding the reduction of its environmental impact. Mentored by designer and sustainability expert Sophie Thomas (UK), Futuring is developing an open source toolkit to help BIO27’s design teams to raise their awareness and reduce the impact of their work. The pioneering toolkit will be published and available to designers and cultural institutions globally, sharing the Biennial’s sustainability study for others to build upon.

What is digital marketing and how can I use it to promote a fashion brand on a budget? These are common questions faced by young as well as seasoned fashion designers who are looking for new sales channels to reach relevant customers. But since the fashion world is somewhat specific, and the budgets for promotion are extremely limited, we have to be particularly skilful in our work. So how do you even get started and what results can you expect? Just like in the fashion world, lets guide ourselves by our own creativity.

After beginnings in traditional media, Anže Frantar took the digital path and landed in digital marketing through a blog dedicated to street style, fashion journalism and public relations. He developed many domestic and foreign brands. Today, as a specialist in creative and content concepts, he takes care of marketing and sales solutions for internationally recognized companies in the PM agency, business media.

The project is part of the partner network of the Centre for Creativity platform. The project is co-financed by the European Union from the European Fund for Regional Development and the Republic of Slovenia.

How do you put together a fashion collection like a puzzle? And what does such an approach bring to modern fashion design? How can you build a non-seasonal collection around design-refined basic pieces of clothing and simply upgrade them over the next few seasons? Where and how can you capture the right target group for clothes made on the principle of ‘slow fashion’, with high-quality materials and intended for long-term use?

The training is intended for all fashion designers who are wondering how to prepare a collection for retail at home and abroad.

Mojca Celin is a renowned fashion designer and president of the Zoofa Cooperative. In collaboration with graphic designer and internationally awarded artistic director Petja Montanez (Mayer McCann), they create the Princip and Artpump brands, which represent the principle of “slow fashion”.

The training is free and will take place online. Click here to apply.
