In January 2025, the Centre for Creativity/MAO launched an open call for product proposals for the online catalogue of the selection of Slovenian gifts under the MADE IN SLOVENIA brand, selected by CzK. The call for proposals received 277 products from 117 different applicants working in different areas of the CCSI by the deadline of 19 March 2025. The Expert Committee welcomed the large number of applications and the diversity of the proposals received. In the first round of selection, which took place online between 24 March and 1 April 2025, the jury shortlisted 83 products that best met the objectives and criteria of the call for proposals.

The applicants of the products shortlisted for the second round were invited to physically submit their products to the jury for evaluation. The jury made the final selection on Wednesday 16 April 2025. The seven-member expert jury was composed of Maja Bahar, National Museum of Slovenia; Barbara Hiršman, Protocol of the Republic of Slovenia; Barbara Jaki, National Gallery; Primož Jeza, ALUO; Katjuša Kranjc, Raketa; Maja Vardjan, MAO; Mina Žabnikar, Grupa Ee.

On the basis of a review of the submitted products, the jury unanimously selected 50 products, in accordance with the criteria of the call for proposals, which scored 60 points or more in the final overall evaluation of the expert jury and which, in accordance with the call for proposals, are included in the online catalogue of the selection of Slovenian gifts under the auspices of the brand MADE IN SLOVENIA, as selected by the CzK.

The jury agreed that the selected products of Slovenian artists, designers, organisations and companies comply with the criteria of the public call for entries, being sophisticated, bold, innovative and distinctive. They are distinguished by the quality of the materials used and their excellent physical execution. The products are functional and suitable as a gift for a variety of business and protocol occasions. The selected products reflect the important values and characteristics of Slovenia as a green, creative, smart country through the rich cultural, economic, environmental, technological or social identity and heritage of the Republic of Slovenia and the national brand I Feel Slovenia and Made in Slovenia. The selection of Slovenian gifts will help to increase the diplomatic, cultural and business visibility of Slovenia.

The editing of the catalogue is scheduled for May and June 2025, and the publication of the catalogue in September 2025.

Such calls encourage the development of product designs suitable for corporate, occasional and protocol gifts, as well as smaller-scale product designs more broadly. Continuous public calls and selections of Slovenian Made in Slovenia gifts raise the quality of design production and, by publishing on the website, allow a direct link and comparison of this product segment. At the same time, they open up business opportunities for Slovenian creators both locally and internationally. Through their conceptual and design approach, they present a vision of modern Slovenia and contribute to its diplomatic, cultural and business visibility in the international arena.

Due to the overwhelming response from partners and applicants, the Centre for Creativity will continue to build on the CzK selection and continue the open call in the coming years.

Selection Announcement: End of April 2025

The third edition of the Creative Incubator, educational and mentoring program of the Center for Creativity, which helps creators develop entrepreneurial competencies for a more successful performance and presentation on the market, ended with a public presentation at the Demo Day event, which took place on October 3, 2024 at the Museum of Architecture and Design. Fourteen teams participated in the program and developed their creative brands. First place and a financial incentive of 10,000 euros were awarded to the creators of Lou and Co., a company specializing in the sale of fashionable and sustainable dog accessories, who, according to the expert committee, made the greatest progress in the development of their project.

The prize winners, who received financial incentives and other prizes, were chosen by the expert committee of the Center for Creativity, composed of Assoc. prof. Rok Kuhar, Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Peter Ličen, director of Lushna d.o.o., Assist. prof. dr. Aleš Pustovrh, Faculty of Economics, Niko Slavnić, investor and entrepreneur, and Meta Štular, assistant director, head of strategic development and programs at Rog Center. Participating teams that took part in Creative Incubator were selected by an expert committee from 37 applications received in May of this year.

The second place was taken by Aljaž Škarabot, a passionate mountain biker who, out of his own need, developed the idea of a new product – a carrier for the Apeak full face helmet and received a financial incentive of 5,000 euros. The third place and a financial incentive of 3,000 euros went to Little Otja, a brand of home products designed for modern families and created in the visual communication studio Pikto. Fourth place and a financial incentive of 1,000 euros went to Andraž Grulja, who founded the Stitchuation, an imaginative tapestry-making kit that defies productivity and encourages enjoyment of the sewing process. The package for the use of the Rog Center’s laboratories for a whole year worth 390 euros for the project with the best presentation, chosen by the participants of the program, was awarded to the design studio Jugošik, founded by the architect and designer Nina Savič, who connects modern design with the heritage of the Yugoslavian lighting and furniture industry through renovation and transformation of the old pieces of furniture into unique products. The FOLDS team, which focuses on creating metal objects for home, and the Kaaita team, which produces slippers for boutique hotels in Europe, received special praise from the expert committee for the successful development of the projects and the progress achieved in the program.

Aljaž Škarabot

Aljaž Škarabot is a passionate mountain biker who developed the idea for a new product out of his own need - a full face helmet holder. For this reason, he developed a more practical special holder. With experience in sales, organization and marketing, he independently tackled the project, which is currently in the prototyping phase.

Exhibition

Slovenian creators presented at the Vienna Design Week

20.–29. sep 2024

Vienna, Austria

Exhibition Crafting Futures | Making the future, which deals with the current topic of connecting modern design production with the rich heritage of handicrafts, was presented for the first time at the Triennial of Handicrafts in the Koroška Regional Museum, and later also in the Museum of Architecture and Design and the Posavje Museum Brežice. The project was developed under the auspices of the European platform Distributed Design, which enabled ten Slovenian creators to co-produce a limited edition series. This year the following works were presented At the Vienna Design Week:

  • Brass Spoon | Uršula Oitzl Magister, Lucija Perko
  • Kočevje treetop | Andraž Rudi Vrhovšek, Festival lesa
  • VuVu |Črt Štrubelj, Luka Bernik
  • Dysfunction | Maruša Mazej
  • Kaduja | Pjorkkala
  • Čebelino | Rok Oblak, Luka Pleskovič
  • Glaze from construction waste | Rok Oblak
  • Corn Dolly | Darja Malešič
  • Oreika | Lara Baler, Boris Ouček
  • Quilted blanket of life | Nina Vastl Štefe

As part of the Vienna Design Week, Design Corner Ljubljana also presented an inspiring overview of the works of Slovenian designers with their own brands and/or production lines. An interesting and thought-provoking exhibition “WATER”, which is also a kind of insider’s guide to the state of modern Slovenian product design, featured following creators: Soft baroque, Lara Bohinc, EQUA, David Tavčar, Kolpasan, Darja Malešič, Pikka, Rok Oblak, Urška Sadar, Prapra, Tanja Pak, Hana Tavčar, Izadora Verlič and Ajda Bertok.

The presentation of Slovenian creators at the Vienna Design Week was accompanied by a round table Catalysts of Change: Innovations at the intersection of design, heritage and technology, where the speakers talked about how to establish an ecosystem in which public institutions, producers such as museums and agencies, designers, architects and other creators – together with companies and other regional partners – play an active role in promoting technological and non-technological innovations.

The Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport has listened to the initiative of the Center for Creativity and will award 4 additional points to applicants who are also recipients of one of the “Promotion of Creative Cultural Industries – Center for Creativity” tenders or bearers of the CzK Made in Slovenia mark of excellence upon application, which strengthens the link between the creative and economic sectors.

The purpose of the tender in question is to directly strengthen the micro-enterprise with the aim of enabling a development breakthrough, and indirectly to strengthen the entire wood processing industry and use the most important Slovenian natural resource – wood, which is also one of the foundations of the European transition to a low-carbon society.

Micro-enterprises represent the vast majority of all enterprises in the wood processing industry. These companies form the basis of the industry and an indispensable link in the wood processing chain. So they are the most dynamic part of the industry, but at the same time they are also very vulnerable to external factors (e.g. financial crises, economic crisis). The tender in question thus highlights the specific needs of micro-enterprises within the narrower wood processing industry (C16 and C31).

The tender funds amount to a total of 1.5 million euros, and the individual financings range from 15,000 to 70,000 euros of subsidies and cover 60% of the eligible costs of the project. Read more at the link.

In 2022, the Asocijacija, as part of the PartnerNnetwork of CZK and with co-production of the Centre for Creativity, designed an educational project aimed at strengthening the cultural and creative sector.

It is envisioned as a continuation of last year’s project, with a series of two additional online workshops and video interviews with lecturers. The program will reprise most material from the workshop of the previous year. They want to continue the educational and support counselling program within the project and emphasise it with additional dates for online counselling and enable dynamic individual consultations with mentors.

The aim of the project is to empower artists with knowledge in the administrative field. In addition, Asocijacija designed some of the content with special emphasis on the potential for expanding and the range of opportunities or strengthening knowledge for market penetration and new adaptations and directions to new challenges in the time of the pandemic. Taking into account the current situation, the project was regulated in such a way that the workshops were moved online, thus enabling the participation of all interested parties, regardless of where they live and work.

Due to the constant need for such knowledges, they also wanted to create materials through the project that would remain available to CCS actors in the public domain whenever they need them. They agreed with the mentors to create video conversations with selected highlights in accordance with their expertise. In addition to this recognized general need for service assistance for administrative issues, the project also provided for twenty-five telephone counselling appointments. As part of the project, they will also conduct one-hour individual consultations with experts for KKS actors (taxes and accounting, PR, strategic and business communication, copyright, etc.), and these will be carried out between the expert and individual participants in the consultation.

The workshops are open and will in principle be limited to up to 50 applicants.

Between March and June, 3 workshops will be held and 2 additional video interviews will be published:

1.) Accounting and taxes for cultural creators

2.) Comprehensive branding

3.) Strategic and business communication

Project duration: February 1, 2022– June 31, 2022

The Creative Incubator Program

In the competition for the European Prize for Entrepreneurship EEPA 2021, the public agency SPIRIT SLOVENIJA selected the Centre for Creativity (CzK) at the Museum of Architecture and Design as one of the Slovenian finalists for the EEPA 2021 Prize awarded by the European Commission.

The European Enterprise Promotion Award recognises the most successful entrepreneurship promoters in Europe, presents best business practices, raises awareness of the added value of entrepreneurship and encourages and inspires potential entrepreneurs. The EEPA 2021 Grand Jury Prize is awarded in any category and will be awarded to the most creative and inspiring ideas for promoting entrepreneurship in Europe.

With this, the Centre for Creativity entered the further competition for the pan-European award. SPIRIT recognised the role of CzK in promoting entrepreneurship in the creative sector and its connection with the economy. Among the registered projects or. With good practices, the National Expert Commission has selected two Slovenian representatives to represent Slovenia. In doing so, the commission followed the following criteria:

  • Originality and feasibility;
  • impact on the local economy;
  • improving relations between local stakeholders;
  • portability: how the approach can be replicated in the region and elsewhere in Europe.

In addition to CzK, the national selection also included the project “GREEN PENGUIN” in the field of “supporting sustainable transition”; both nominated projects raise awareness, educate, inspire and encourage various target groups towards an entrepreneurial, sustainable way of thinking and acting and in their field record some extraordinary results and long-term effects.

In the continuation of this year’s competition “European Prize for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship”, the European Commission will select members of the commission who will select shortlisted nominees in each category from a set of applications from individual countries. Nominees will be invited to the closing event with the award ceremony. The winners in individual categories are expected to be announced in November 2021 as part of the annual SME meeting of the European Commission (SME Assembly) in Portorož.

Creative Incubator Programme

On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, the Ministry of Culture together with the Centre for Creativity held an online event to present some recipients of the public tender “Promotion of creative cultural industries – CzK 2019” and a meeting of recipients of the public tender “Promotion of creative cultural industries – CzK 2020-2021”.

Some of the recipients of funds from the 2019 tender presented their already completed and realized projects, work processes and goals achieved with the help of these financial incentives at the event. We looked at the projects: the online platform for artists Artopolis (set A1 ), LED modular lamp Stellar (set A1), the Mila.Vert brand of sustainable women’s clothing (set A2), the souvenir collection Breakfast with Plečnik (set A2), increasing differentiation in the company Gostol TST (set A3) and the innovative urban lighting system Bruma from Geoenergetika (lot A3). In particular, the companies from the A3 set highlighted the important role that cooperation with the creative sector plays, as it enables the company to open new opportunities and views on its operations. Video presentations of all projects of the tender from 2019 are available on our website, as well as all supported projects within the current public tender 2020–2021.

At the event, which attracted close to 100 participants, we presented work methods, managing and reporting on the projects of current recipients, and the role of the Centre for Creativity in monitoring the development of these projects. The networking part of the event was reserved for communicating with the administrator from the Ministry of Culture and our mentors, as well as for the exchange of experiences and sharing of advice from some recipients of the 2019 public tender funds.

The public tender “Promotion of creative cultural industries”, led by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, provides funds for the development of creative companies, projects, and ideas, as well as stronger cooperation between the economy and the creative sector. Creatives and businesspeople can receive between € 15,000 and € 40,000 in grants for various development phases and approved projects:

  • A1: The seed phase – “Concept verification” is intended for the testing and development of creative business ideas or prototypes before entering the market.
  • A2: The launching phase – “Creative start-up” provides support to companies in the creative sector in the growth phase, and encourages innovative development projects and expansion to international markets.
  • A3: Connecting creatives and the economy – “Creative Connector” encourages strategic cooperation between creatives and companies from other fields who want to restructure their processes, products, or services, or develop their own production with the help of creators, designers, design management, and other creative services and brands.

From 2019 to 2020, a total of 115 companies already received grants from the Ministry of Culture in this public tender. Funds approved for the development of their projects total almost 3 million euros, and 45 new jobs will be created during the course of the project. The figures show great success and a growing interest in the tender, and we hope that such financial incentives will continue in the future.

Upon concluding the tenth ECIS 2020 entitled Framing Creative Futures, the organizers announced that the next European Creative Industries Summit will take place next year in Ljubljana!

Videos and materials from ECIS2020 are available here.

With the upcoming Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2021, the European Creative Business Network (ECBN) has invited the Centre for Creativity (CzK) and Creative Industries Styria to serve as co-organizers of the next annual European Creative Industries Summit (ECSI) during the Slovenian Presidency of the EU. ECIS conferences, which bring together some 200 participants from up to 20 countries, focus on policy makers, governance, cultural creative centres, researchers, educators and, above all, intermediaries and innovators from all sectors of the cultural and creative industries and the wider creative economy.

The forthcoming European Creative Industries Summit 2021 (# ECIS2021) will analyse the consequences of the current COVID-19 pandemic and examine the current state of European creative industries. The conference will also examine the needs and development in education and skills for creative professionals today. In addition, the conference will provide an overview of the relationship between the creative industries and the European Green Deal, as well as opportunities for business cooperation and collaboration.

The European Creative Industries Summit (ECIS) was set up in 2010 by the European Network of Creative Industries (ECBN) as a conference for creative professionals and intermediaries to discuss the situation in the European cultural and creative economy. Today, ECIS is the largest annual summit of cultural and creative industries (CCI), bringing together more than 200 European experts in the capital of the current EU Presidency. The conference aims to provide information on current developments in the CCI sector, as well as to find possible solutions and discuss European policy. The European Creative Industries Summit (ECIS) is an annual conference of the European creative economy dedicated to this sector, so ECSI, as a project manager, works with local organizations every year to organize this event in parallel with the EU Presidency.

We invite you to participate in the DIVA project workshop, which creates an ecosystem of cross-border Italian-Slovenian cooperation for social and technological innovations in the emerging society of the future.

The online workshop is aimed at stakeholders in the wider cross-border region, as it will provide information on the forthcoming DIVA call for pilot cooperation projects, which promotes cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in the cultural and creative sector.

The workshop is free, and registration is required.

The DIVA project (Interreg IT-SI, 2019–2022) develops an innovation ecosystem and value chains: it supports cross-border innovation with the help of creative industries. The intention is to improve cooperation between Italian and Slovenian innovation platforms, educational institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises. We pay special attention to the development and implementation of methodologies for enabling and encouraging cooperation between creative and artistic individuals and organizations and companies. Introducing an artistic way of thinking into innovation processes is designed to better enable the flow of visionary ideas into technological, commercial and social innovation.

Most people are already familiar with Kickstarter as a crowdfunding platform that enables young artists, architects, painters, photographers and entrepreneurs to raise funds in order to help launch their ideas, products and companies.

Projects can range from the small and local to very ambitious and global, and extend accross many areas of the creative and cultural sector, which are among the most successful sectors on the portal. The possibility of raising funds on Kickstarter, in addition to financing a project, is a great way to test the product on the market, quickly build visibility around the world, and gather contacts for further projects.

In September, we officially welcomed Slovenian companies on Kickstarter. This opportunity also opened up the possibility for a campaign to apply to smaller businesses, which can apply for modest investments and finance smaller, possibly niche projects – which is exactly what Kickstarter sees as the future of the platform.

According to Heather Corcoran, director of design and technology at Kickstarter, this type of campaign is for those looking for support for their creative independence, looking to create a quality relationship with their supporters, and for those looking for an experience beyond the product itself. She says three points are key to a successful Kickstarter campaign:

  • Finished prototype and business plan

The appearance of the product is important for supporters, but the prototype produced is imperative to properly assess costs related to the product. The price for a product on Kickstarter should be set about three times the production price. In any case, transparency is also essential at this point: to show how the product is made.

  • An interesting and authentic story

The story behind the product is almost as important as the design of the product itself. Designer Ivana Blaž, who with Nina Mršnik successfully launched and completed the campaign “Kobeiagi Kilims: traditional hand-woven rugs with a twist” in 2015, mentioned that they were noticed in the media because of their story and their connection with local crafts abroad, which helped them gain visibility and finance the launch of their idea. You need to find the right story for your brand and tell it the right way.

  • Community building

According to Heather, the first campaign is the most difficult, as people usually don’t yet have an audience and find it harder to reach supporters; Emil Halilović, who has run three successful campaigns with his ONDU Pinhole Cameras agrees. Fortunately, the Kickstarter platform is based on a large community; but creating networks and contacting potential project supporters is the most important part, both before and during the campaign. Last but not least, much depends on the quality of community leadership and management and determines whether the campaign will actually be successful in the end.

Opportunity for creative Slovenian projects

In September of 2020, Kickstarter will officially open the platform to Slovenian projects – to all local artists, sculptors, photographers, architects, painters and more; to all those have shown to be the most successful creative branches on the Kickstarter platform.

What that means in practice

From now on, it won’t be necessary to register a company abroad, with all the expenditures and obstacles that come with it, simply in order to become part of the platform. This also means that our local partners, who are already collaborating with Kickstarter, will help you with your launch and help make your campaign more successful.
