This year’s Open House Slovenia Festival is presented under the theme All Measures of Architecture, posing the following questions: Where is architecture headed? Who does it speak to? For whom is it “calibrated”? It is not merely a matter of physical measure, the scope of an architectural task, or the client’s financial capacity and receptiveness. Architecture operates on multiple levels: it provides a home, opens up public space, shapes the landscape, and builds community. Yet most important is its right measure—one that fosters relationships, an open and inclusive society, respect for the past, and responsibility toward the environment. More than 90 projects of various typologies will be open to visitors across the country.

Registration for the guided tours is mandatory and will open on 8 April at 9:00.

The exhibition marks the 110th anniversary of the birth and 50th anniversary of the death of architect Marjan Šorli (1915–1975) and is the first in the new Preview series, which innovatively opens the MAO collection to the public.

Šorli was a unique architect of Slovenian post-war architecture, creating architecture tailored to the human needs being, with erudite knowledge, an emphasis on harmony with nature, the use of traditional materials, and a human scale. His work combines the influences of the Plečnik’s school, research on folk architecture and study trips around Europe and the United States.

The exhibition does not merely present an overview of his oeuvre, but offers insight into the research process: fragments of archival material, plans and models analyzed by students of the Faculty of Architecture and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design are combined into thematic sets, commented on and supplemented.

The Open House Slovenia (OHS) architectural festival will once again open the doors to high-quality Slovenian architecture across the country. Taking place from April 11 to 13, 2025, the festival will offer free guided tours of over 70 architectural projects of various typologies.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience architecture in person, guided by architects, researchers, and other spatial experts.

This year’s central theme is Heritage for the Future, which questions the meaning of architectural and spatial heritage in today’s context. The program highlights innovative approaches to preservation and renovation, the importance of local identity, and the search for balance between respecting tradition and responding to contemporary challenges. The key question posed by the festival is: Which of today’s practices will become the heritage of tomorrow?

A professional jury selected the most outstanding projects from the submissions, recognizing them as relevant and high-quality responses to today’s architectural, social, and environmental issues.

The full festival program is published on the Open House Slovenia online platform, where mandatory registration for tours will be open starting April 2.

The event is held under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar.

CASTLE | concepts, objects, spaces

13 Jun–27 Okt 2024

MAO

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Nestled between the many layers of Fužine Castle’s history, the collection of the Museum of Architecture and Design is an eclectic yet intrinsically coherent body of documents and objects related to space and materiality. Drawing on the idea of a transhistorical museum, the exhibition Castle → Concepts, Objects, Spaces recognizes history as a stratified amalgamation of narrative strands between which it seeks intersections, concentrations of meaning, reflections, and echoes.

The confrontation between the castle and museum objects does not put a spotlight on the building’s history but focuses in the first place on the life that transpired there, the shifts it provoked, and the new mindset, knowledge, and innovations it has bred through centuries in cahoots with the surrounding nature. This trans-historicity can also be understood as a quest for the timelessness of museum artefacts and the castle’s walls that nevertheless does not seek to deny the material nature of their becoming. Through understanding of the collection, and of the castle as its current location, as an open and fluid time-space entity, the current moment is embedded in the continuity of history, thus becoming empowered and eager to ascertain the inevitable: how to go on from here?

The exhibition layout conforms to the elements of the space. The moat, field, room, tower, river, and courtyard are not mere anonymous venues, but actively co-create the experience of the exhibition. Museum objects, especially the lesser known ones, speak of the concepts shaped by the life in the castle and its spatial presence, but are nevertheless universal, omnipresent and always relevant. In the exhibition, they are communicated through the themes of occupations and liberations, strategies of self-sufficiency, an uncanny domesticity, knowledge production, materiality in motion, and intersections of public and private.

The presented concepts, objects, and spaces derive from their time, but are not defined by it; their juxtaposition inspires new relationships and dialogues between objects, architecture, individuals, and the public. New reading reactivates these objects and introduces a certain tension between them: in new spatial constellations, torn out of their original context and function, they open as yet unexplored meanings that are inherent and topical to our times. More than a static site of the past, the museum and its location stand and serve as active agents in the production of contemporary creativity and culture.

The exhibition also presents products created with the support of CzK as part of Distributed Design – Crafting Futures:

And products created with the support of CzK as part of Distributed Design – Design Dining:

Among the products are also some products from the BIO production platforms Coincidence Finder – a continuation of the project called Iskalnik. The Ratio product from the first edition of the Made In project and some products from BIO 50 are also presented.

In Search of Well-Tempered Architecture

Between 20 May and 26 November, an exhibition of the Slovenian pavilion will be on display at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia.

Over the past decade, ecology has had a significant impact on many disciplines and has become an integral part of developments within these disciplines. And architecture is no exception. Credit for the purported eco-friendly nature of architecture goes, however, to other engineering-related disciplines, with heat pumps, zero-energy house technology, recovery ventilation systems, and other innovations transforming our homes into high-tech machines intended to help us manage our energy consumption economically and efficiently.

In collaboration with 50 European architects and younger generation creators, we have sought out examples of vernacular buildings from Europe that – unlike current contemporary practice – address the issue of ecology holistically, as an intrinsic part of architectural design. The energy principles of vernacular buildings were divided into categories such as a room within a room, heat cell, dropped ceiling, or extended perimeter. The examples presented also show that energy-related inputs in vernacular architecture did not generally serve as mono-functional elements but had a social and ritual role in addition to their primary function. By addressing issues of heating and cooling, they generated and organized the ways buildings were inhabited, and established specific relations between architecture, users, and the environment.

This approach moves away from the common, nostalgic perception of vernacular architecture as a relic of (forever lost) historical periods. Instead, vernacular architecture is understood as a living specimen of energy principles that are relevant to the current time and can be used as the basis for a critical reinterpretation of contemporary architectural production and for thinking about a future architecture – an architecture for which it is not enough to be merely ‘energy efficient’; instead, it has to become ecological.

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Four months ago, we temporarily set up our premises in the Cukrarna Palace, where we installed Created in Slovenia, an exhibition presenting the Centre for Creativity’s operation over the previous  almost five-year period. At the same time, as part of the BIO 27 accompanying programme, we organised three international exhibitions which aimed to explore and confront the industrial and technocentric with alternative narratives and mythologies. Before we wrap up the exhibitions, we invite you to join us for the Sunday at the Cukrarna Palace event, which will see young Slovenian artists present their fresh design collections, a tour of the neighbouring Sever Parking Garage with the Nonument Group, and several guided tours of the Created in Slovenia exhibition and the BIO 27 accompanying programme throughout the day.

11:00-15:00 | POP-UP FAIR

From ceramics to fashion accessories, there’s something unique for every home and every wardrobe! Participating artists:

Brencha | Brinas | Fuga | Gentle Power | JNŽ studio | Jona Bednjanec | Juha studio | Nika Ravnik | Pirate Piška | Toasted Furniture and others

12:00-15:00 | Nonument Group: TGH-68: Nothing Can Happen Here, audio drive-in through the Sever Parking Garage

The characteristic feature of the Sever Parking Garage, one of the masterpieces of the architect Savin Sever, is its distinct duality: it is a revered example of quality 1960s architecture and at the same time a neglected and “useless” building. With an audio drive through the garage, the Nonument Group will draw attention to its specific structure: the building is not only architecturally fascinating, but despite its supposedly problematic present already full of vital content and individual improvisations. Read openly enough, its specific structure, such as it is now, offers the changing city around it a platform for new, technologically contemporary, social, and city-forming content.

You’ll be driven individually by taxi up the spiral ramp, thinking of this unusual garage as a universe in itself.

The Nonument Group’s intervention is based on field observation and interviews with garage users, employees, and professionals. The audio walk is based on the story “The Library of Babel” by Jorge Luis Borges.

The audio ride lasts 20 minutes and is in Slovenian. For organisation reasons, please send your applications to: hana.vardjan@czk.si.

This year, the Nonument Group participated in the CZK partnership network with the Field Events project.

Produced by the Centre for Creativity and MoTA – Museum of Transitory Arts.

The project is a co-production with the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and part of the pre-event celebrations for the opening of the Cukrarna Palace.

11:00, 13:00, 14:00 | Guided tours of Created in Slovenia and BIO27 Satellite programme

Guided tours of the Created in Slovenia exhibition and BIO 27 accompanying programme. The tours will be hosted by Anja Zorko, Head of the Centre for Creativity, Maja Kovačič, Project Manager at the Centre for Creativity, and Aleksandar Mišković (Vidic Grohar Architects).

New Praxes, New Tools: Emerging Slovenian and Austrian Architects

6 Oct 2022

| 18:00 - 21:00

TU Vienna, Festsaal

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

BACKGROUND

The event aims to shed light on the workings of contemporary Slovenian and Austrian architectural practices, which are interesting for the way they approach architectural themes and tasks. Architects today are no longer only concerned with designing beautiful houses and interiors, but the range of our tasks has grown beyond that. We are now spatial strategists, mediators between users and space, custodians of heritage and spatial activists, solving complex organisational and spatial problems.

At this event we present ten Slovenian and ten Viennese architectural practices that started their independent professional work in times of global financial and climate crises. The crises have also led to shifts in the way we think about the tasks of architecture, rethinking the connection between architecture and society, ecology, as well as the way we organise (architectural) practice.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

In their presentations, architects will present their way of working, what is the task of architecture today and how to present architectural themes to the public. In addition to the already selected Slovenian practices, 10 Austrian practices have been selected which have an affiliation to TU Vienna.

The Slovenian architectural practices selected by curators Mika Cimolini and Matevž Čelik are:

  • A2O2

Nonument Group – field events

2 and 4 June, 12 June and 24 June 2022

Villa Rafut near Nova Gorica, Villa Bled, Plečnik's Stadium

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Field events are the basis for thinking about innovative ways of recording and preserving heritage, a way to involve the community and a starting point for artistic interventions that focus on abandoned, overlooked, forgotten and erased architectures and open up spaces for viewing them.

We will dedicate two events to Villa Rafut. In the first, on 2 June at 19.00 , we will be guided through the diverse state of Laščak’s architecture in Alexandria (from many demolished buildings to buildings in which informal construction is growing and the building that today houses the Museum of Royal Jewelry) through an introductory online lecture by the architect and by artist Mohamed Adel Dessouki. This reading will also be a starting point for understanding the complex situation of erasure of architectural heritage in Alexandria in general. Dessouki is also a founding member of the Save Alex initiative, which since 2012 advocates the protection of the city’s rich architectural heritage and warns of the alarming state of its erasure.

On Saturday, 4 June at 17.00, we will move to the Villa Rafut park, where the renovation is starting. Miloš Kosec will guide you through the ruins of the villa and the garden and, in dialogue with Kaja Širok and the guests, will ask questions about domestic and foreign in the space. The tour will be interspersed with a performance by the Society for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of Alexandria, in which we will listen to songs and excerpts from the letters of women who, in the same period as Laščak and mainly as care workers (educators, nurses, governesses and maids), travelled to Alexandria to earn money.

Anton Laščak or Antonio Lasciac was an architect from Gorizia and of Slovenian descent. He built a brilliant career in the metropolises of colonial Egypt at the end of the nineteenth century. For his architectural merits, he received the noble title of Bey from the Egyptian Viceroy Abbas II. In his old age, he wanted to settle down in the oriental surroundings of Villa Rafut, which he built in his native Goriški, but due to a combination of circumstances, he died in Cairo at the advanced age of ninety.

Mohamed Adel Dessouki is an educator and visual artist. He received his BA in Architecture from Alexandria University in 2000, his MA from the Arab Academy of Science and Technology in 2003 and his PhD in Architecture from Cairo University in 2012. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture at the Arab Academy of Science and Technology. In his artistic practice, Dessouki focuses on memory, architecture and everyday life. He blogs about the city of Alexandria, its endangered heritage and history for Gudran Medina Mot’aba (Walls of the Exhausted City). He lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt.

Production: Nonument Group / MoTA – Museum of Transitional Arts

The project is part of the Centre for Creativity partner network. The project is co-financed by the European Union from the European fund for Regional Development and the Republic of Slovenia, MOL – Department of Culture and the Ministry of Environment and Spacial Planning.

Created in Slovenia

27 May - 2 Oct 2022

Cukrarna Palace, Ambrožev trg 3, Ljubljana

Exhibition Opening: 27 May 2022 at 18:00

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00

On Friday, 27 May 2022, the Cukrarna Palace in Ljubljana will host the opening   of Created in Slovenia, an exhibition of the Museum of Architecture and Design aimed at presenting the achievements of the Centre for Creativity as well as selected programmes developed under its auspices during the first period of the Centre’s operation. The exhibition provides an insight into the work and projects of the Slovenian creative community as they change the domestic and international landscape, creating a different, inclusive, and sustainable future.

In its almost five years of operation, CzK has organised more than 500 programmes aimed at developing the sector, and recorded 248,000 participations of creators, creative businesses, self-employed freelancers, private and non-governmental organisations, and other visitors. Of these, almost 500 companies and several thousand creators were involved in specific programmes. Supported by the Ministry’s calls for proposals and by the CzK they are developing over 200 innovative products and services, maintaining over 50 collaborations between creators and companies from other economy sectors, and are funding 62 new jobs in creative enterprises. To date, over 100 Slovenian creators and entrepreneurs were represented at more than 60 exhibitions and events in 24 countries around the world

The current exhibition, Created in Slovenia, looks back at the first period of the platform’s operation and presents a selection of some of the Centre for Creativity’s most important programmes. The CzK, together with its established partner network and many other partners, connects and supports thousands of creators, artists, self-employed freelancers in culture, creative entrepreneurs, organisations, associations, and institutions across different areas of the sector. On display are the works and projects of a vibrant and creative community whose common denominator is its capacity to create change in society and to think differently, inclusively, and sustainably.

As part of BIO27 Supervernacular, whose production platform and accompanying programme is produced by the Centre for Creativity, the Curkrarna Palace will host three different international exhibitions, The Ideal Eating Experience (Kathrina Dankl in collaboration with Vienna Design Week and Vienna Business Agency) The School of the Untold (Design Campus in collaboration with German Design Graduates and the Goethe Institute) and DNA of Things (Marcin Rusak), which deal with alternatives to the existing systems and show how an experimental and interdisciplinary process enables creative research and innovation, making social and entrepreneurial innovation happen in the first place.

The Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in 2017, at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, established the Centre for Creativity (CzK) – an interdisciplinary platform aimed at the development and promotion of the cultural and creative sector in Slovenia, as well as its integration with the economy and other sectors. Together with the Ministry of Culture’s calls for proposals aimed at promoting creative industries, it supports projects that emerge at the intersection of different creative fields and entrepreneurship and contribute to economic and social progress.

BIO27 Satellite Programme

27 May - 2 Oct 2022

Exhibition opening: 27 May 2022, at 18:00

Opening hours: From tuesday to sunday, 10:00 to 18:00

Super Vernaculars, the theme for BIO27, explores a growing and ambitious movement that takes inspiration from vernacular design and architecture to shape a radical vision for a more responsive and resilient future. Alongside the main exhibition at The Museum of Architecture and Design and other commissions within the city centre, we are showcasing three different international design shows as part of the Satellite programme which intends to further explore and juxtapose alternative narratives and mythologies to the industrial and technocentric.

Aiming to bring together practitioners and thinkers who challenge value systems and our conventional understanding of linear production and the relationship we have with the perishable present and the unknown future, we have selected projects from Austria, Germany and Poland that range from established to emerging artists, designers and design collectives that all make connections across larger cultural and societal conversations.

Each project invites visitors to explore important topics such as the food industry and rethinking our eating habits, reconsidering material production, and a poetic and scientific investigation of the dialogue between humans and the natural world. Focusing on the values in society today and acknowledging the need for change, these exhibits are inspirational starting points that pave the way towards a sustainable revolution:

  • DNA of Things (Marcin Rusak)
  • The Ideal Eating Experience (Kathrina Dankl in collaboration with Vienna Design Week, Vienna Business Agency and Austrian Culture Forum)
  • The School of the Untold (Design Campus in collaborations with German Design Graduates and Goethe Institut)

DNA of Things

DNA of Things marks a decisive step forward in the field of scientific research applied to Marcin Rusak’s creative method, linking it back to one of Rusak’s very first investigations. In the Flower Monster project (2013–2014), the possible implications of genetic mutation applied to natural evolution were studied. Such a contrast marks a new dialogue between man and the natural world – one that can annul the limits imposed on our materiality by the factor of time. In this exhibition, the stages of Rusak’s ongoing research are presented as a Living Archive, a review of techniques and experiments crystallising deterioration, celebrating transformation, and reducing entire processes down to a smell or a material. The Unnatural Practice manifesto has ignited the studio’s collective conscience, leading to a more pronounced dialogue between science and technology, human and non-human.

The Ideal Eating Experience

Everyone needs to eat. But how? In the Urban Food & Design project, Vienna Design Week, together with the Vienna Business Agency, demonstrates which roles design can play in the production, distribution, and consumption of food. The project curated by design researcher Kathrina Dankl invites us to playfully explore local and international positions on the subject in the familiar setting of a shopping situation, to try something new – and to possibly even alter a few of our habits. This “supermarket of ideas” has now travelled from Vienna to Ljubljana in collaboration with Austrian Culture Forum and, in keeping with the theme of Super Vernaculars, employs a scoring system that offers information on the ecological impact of our eating habits and the food industry. Appropriate solutions are served up on the side!

THE SCHOOL OF THE UNTOLD

Today, designers, architects and artists can be critical agents in the transformation of global systems. As the earth's resources are being depleted, we are facing an urgent need to revisit our knowledge and education of material production. This year the Design Campus Summer School in Dresden, Germany (18 July – 26 August 2022), will be radically rooted in an expansive understanding of the realities that shape today’s world. The three projects on display are awardees at The School of the Untold, coproduced by the Goethe Institute Ljubljana in collaboration with German Design Graduates, a network of design schools and alumni hosted by the German Design Council. The graduates were selected because of their affinity for materials and the utopic potential of their final projects and will also receive scholarship for the Design Campus in Dresden.

The earth is calling!

Psssssst. Pay attention. Retreat somewhere alone. We recommend outdoor space: terrace, garden, lawn, park, forest. Take off your slippers, shoes, socks. Close your eyes. And listen…

If you hear nothing, we apologize for the stolen time and invite you to put on your shoes again and get back to your chores.

Those of you who did hear, however, read on. What you have heard is the call of the earth. The earth is calling for you to touch it, dig into out and create something out of it.

We invite all those involved in earth construction and earth-related crafts to attend a professional conference on 24 February 2022, at 18:00 at the Museum for Architecture and Design in Ljubljana, where we will assess the current situation in this field and identify common goals for the future.

The symposium The World Inside: Designing Modern Interiors, 1930–Today, organised in cooperation with the Museum for Architecture and Design and designed as a central part of the programs of the exhibition The World Within: Designing Modern Interiors, 1930-present, will take place in MAO. Tuesday, 9 November at 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition, which for the first time on a large scale deals with the interior as a subject of systematic research and evaluation, is on view at the Museum for Architecture and Design until 28 November 2021.

The symposium will discuss the future of living through the prism of interior design in four sets. We will open questions about the porosity of the interior by blurring the boundaries between private and public, the impact of information technology on the interior, the home as the basic living cell of every person, the conditions necessary for comfort and well-being and ethical and ecological responsibility in interior design as well as about its positioning in the architectural design profession.

The discursive segment will bring together experts working in various fields: architects, designers, lighting experts, psychologists and researchers, with whom we will establish the interior as space that can respond quickly to the socio-cultural context in which it is created and one which has an important role in its creation.

The subject that we are tackling for this Skillshare is low-carbon buildings. The EU has committed Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The aim is to develop a competitive and resource-efficient industry that does not generate greenhouse gas emissions and in which economic growth is separate from resource use. According to the United Nations Environment Program, buildings and their construction generate 36% of global energy consumption and 39% of carbon dioxide emissions. It will therefore be crucial to decarbonise the building construction sector. However, decarbonisation begins with the planning of settlements and buildings.

Dana Behrman from UNStudio will present the vision of the Brainport Smart District. Unlike everything else they have designed so far, UNStudio’s urban vision for the Brainport smart district is a flexible network that will evolve according to the needs of its residents. The Brainport Smart District as such is not a pre-determined fixed plan, first planned and later built; it is a responsive urban tendency where planning and construction will be closely linked to user-led gradual development.

Over the next ten years, 1,500 new homes and 12 acres of business premises will be built based on the needs of the people who live and work in the area. The goal is to achieve a sustainable, circular and socially connected neighbourhood with joint energy production, food production, water management, digital data management and cutting-edge transport systems. Thus, the development will be characterised by the use of the latest technologies and knowledge, and the area will become a “laboratory for living”.

At Syddansk University (SDU) in Denmark, a new university and master’s program in civil engineering and architectural engineering was designed in 2020, focusing on sustainability and digital technologies applied to buildings and cities. The lecture will present the results of research work carried out in collaboration with GXN, the research branch of the Danish architectural firm 3XN. In their presentation, Hugo Mulder (SDU) and Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard (GXN) will explain how the GXN Circular House structured new education and talk about the responsibility that comes with teaching a new generation of civil engineers.

What innovations and adjustments are needed to achieve this goal? To create a sustainable and inclusive built environment that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which will be economical in resources and energy and above all ensure the well-being of users?

  • How to design, build and use low carbon buildings?
  • Which participants need to work together to achieve low-carbon construction?
  • How to speed up the planning and what are already good examples from practice?
  • How can the cultural and creative sector contribute to this goal?

The event is aimed at anyone facing many new dilemmas and looking for new approaches on how to build more sustainably: especially urban planners, architects, builders and investors. At the event, we will present the findings of international experts in the field of construction, architecture and urbanism.

This Skillshare event was created in cooperation with the CER Centre – Partnership for a Sustainable Economy. You need to register for the event by clicking on the ‘Register’ button in the upper right corner. The database of applicants will be managed by the co-organisers of the event and will not be passed on to third parties.

The partners of the event are the Centre for Creativity and CER – Partnership for Sustainable Economy, which also acts as the Slovenian EIT Climate-KIC Hub. The EIT (European Institute of Technology) is a public-private partnership established by the European Union to address climate challenges and promote innovative decarbonisation solutions in key sectors, including construction.

The architects of the younger generation will discuss current developments in the field of architecture in the form of three debates in coming weeks. Through discussions, we will shed light on the way new architectural practices work (in Slovenia) and find out what organisational, design and other professional innovations they are introducing into their work.

We will address the practices and individuals who began their independent professional work ten or fifteen years ago, at a time when the global financial crisis was starting to unfold and when we became increasingly affected by the climate crisis, which opened opportunities for global integration and raised awareness of shared responsibility for the existence of the planet.

We found that during that time, the establishment of independent architectural practices happened differently than before, as all these crises have caused shifts in the way of thinking about the tasks of architecture and raised new awareness on the relation between architecture and society, ecology and the way of organising (architectural) practice. All of these are the points that we would like to highlight.

Co-curators of the project Matevž Čelik and Mika Cimolini invite you to join the young architects on 17, 24 and 31 March and on 30 September – for the closing event. For three Wednesdays in March, we will listen to presentations of architectural practices that are interesting precisely because of the way they tackle architectural topics and tasks. It is not a national or representative selection, but a purely subjective one, and the realisations of selected architectural practices are not that important, but rather the way they deal with given topics.

Architects will each have 9 minutes to answer three key questions:

  • Contemporary Challenges of Humanity: What is the Task of Architecture Today?
  • New practices, new tools: what is the organisational model of your practice?
  • Raising awareness: how do you present your projects to the public?

At the second event, on 24 March, the following will be presented:

PRAKSA.HR/Emil Jurcan, Bika Rebek and A202, who have a common diffuse form and research as well as a “cooperative” and more loose way of working. Emil Jurcan works in Croatia within the engineering cooperative for architecture, urbanism and design Praksa. Bika Rebek is part of the duo SomePlace studio, operating in the USA and globally. The practice is defined by the search for cooperation, flexibility and diversity. A2O2 is a newly formed young collective that is understood as a flexible, living organism. They are interested in “stories of spaces and people, simple, thoughtful and responsible solutions.”

During the first event, on 17 March, the following groups will present themselves: Prostorož, Svet Vmes and Pazi Park! All three practices work in the field of participatory architectural practice, in which they actively involve users, in this way also making them aware. Prostorož in the field of urbanism and activation of public spaces, Svet vmes explores the architecture of education, Pazi park! the field of landscape architecture and landscaping.

The Centre for Creativity has joined in the organization of the 18th Innovation Day, which the GZS (Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia) is organizing for the first time this year in cooperation with the Creative Forum (creativeforum.si). This year’s event focuses on the importance of creativity and the potential of the creative industry to create solutions for the current crisis brought about by the COVID-19 epidemic.

Innovation Day, the leading Slovenian conference on innovation in the economy, is enhancing its global character this year. This year’s conference “Symptoms of Creativity” will bring together representatives of the economy, the creative sector and the political sphere from Slovenia and beyond in a new way. Innovation Day will take place on 30 November 2020 online, and will wrap up with the awarding of the 18th national awards of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for innovation.

This year’s Innovation Day marks the 18th year in a row the event is being held, and is one of the central initiatives in Slovenia aimed at raising awareness of the importance of innovation in the economy and promoting and recognizing exceptional efforts and examples in the field of innovation. This year’s event is held in cooperation with creativeforum.si, the only creative forum on foreign policy in the region, which addresses the creative sector as a driver of social and economic progress, international development, stability and security. The Creative Forum was established in 2018 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with a number of national and international partners. It is primarily focused on the Western Balkans and surrounding countries, but this year, given the global scope of the crisis, it will bring together creatives, entrepreneurs and policy makers from around the world.

Welcome Speech

9:45-10:45

Central theme: Accelerate growth of your business through service innovation, Kristi Hodak (UK), Assistant Director of Design at McKinsey & Company

We live in a paradoxical time. We have the tools to connect with people around the world in an instant, and the technology to share our knowledge in an instant, yet we still spend hours and hours filling out forms on paper for simple, everyday services and pointless tasks. Kristi Hodak, a service design specialist and expert in the sustainable implementation of transformation services, will talk about rethinking these time-consuming, bureaucratic and complex systems and how to replace them with simple, useful services that improve our daily lives.

11:00-12:15

Leaders’ Panel: From Unplanned Spill-overs to Deliberate Cross-overs moderated by Ragnar Siil (EST), Cultural Policy and Creative Industries Expert

Governments around the world are starting to understand the spill-over effects of the creative industries – the unplanned impact on other sectors, e.g. tourism or social well-being. However, what is still mostly absent is deliberate and planned coordination between the creative industries and other policy areas to foster positive results and fully take advantage of the transformative impact.

Ministers and high-level representatives of the European Commission and the OECD will discuss practical ways  to advance impacting crossovers between culture, the economy, and other areas, and to bring culture from the wings to centre stage. Together, we are seeking an answer to the question: what is the role of creativity in the building of more cohesive, more innovative and happier societies?

11:00-12:15

Service Design in Slovenia – Why, When, Where and Who? moderated by Aleš Ugovšek (SI), PhD, Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Services are booming and taking on an increasingly important role in our daily lives. As consumers become more critical and demanding, it is becoming even more important to design these services more effectively. Over the past 30 years, many service design methods have been developed in order to better understand the customer’s perspective. How have these methods reshaped the Slovenian service sector? In which industries has design thinking taken root? Join us and meet some of the companies that have stepped up their game with service design!

13:00-14:30

Preparing Fertile Grounds: Policies to Connect Business and Creativity moderated by Bernd Fesel (DE), Chair of the European Creative Business Network

The value of cultural and creative industries extends far beyond the immediate beneficial effects of culture on an individual’s well-being and community cohesion. Establishing links to industry and commerce has beneficial spillover effects, not only for businesses but also for the economy in general. This is why governments actively support further integration of the CCI into other economic sectors. Which policy instruments have proved effective when trying to bring companies and creatives closer? We will take a closer look at selected policies that have made the biggest bang!

13:00-14:30

Creating Value: Companies and Creatives Hand in Hand moderated by Matej Golob (SI), Innovation Management Consultant

Innovative practices in culture and creativity not only reinforce the innovative capacities of the CCI sector, but spill over into new approaches, practices, services, and products in the economy at large. Companies that understand such potential include creatives in their production processes. What do the cultural and creative sectors bring to the table? Which approaches of CCI inclusion have proved to be the most successful? Join the panel to see first-hand how companies benefit from collaboration with the cultural and creative sectors.

14:45-15:30

Art&Science: What Artistic Innovation can Give to Science&Business? moderated by Peter Purg (SI), PhD, Researcher of Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship

Artists are increasingly joining scientists in their research facilities; the tools and methodologies used by artists and designers radically shift the way research questions are conceived and the way problems are discussed and articulated. These unorthodox methodologies often lead to unorthodox solutions, providing inspiration not only to the teams they are part of but also to society at large. Can artists engage meaningfully in all phases of scientific research? Where could the outsiders’ artistic approach contribute the most? Can these participatory methodologies also provide inspiration for addressing the burning issues of the present? Join leading entrepreneurs and researchers to find out how artists add value to their work.

14:45-15:30

Creative Hubs Session: Hacking New Realities, moderated by Luka Piškorič & Eva Matjaž (SI), Poligon Creative Centre
(on invitation only)

Recognised for their important role in fostering communities of creative professionals and businesses, creative hubs are on the frontline of the challenges facing the creative sector. While the coronavirus crisis has forced many of the hubs to drastically limit their activities, this session will invite creative hub managers to co-create survival strategies for their hubs and communities.

Culture for the Economy

23 Oct 2020

Koper, Maribor, Ljubljana

Za prijavo na dogodek se morate naprej registrirat na naši spletni strani.

Asocijacija group with CzK (Centre for Creativity) under MAO (Museum for Architecture and Design) is inviting visitors to take part in the Culture for the Economy workshop.

Linking the economy with culture, traditional sponsorship models and marketing can have many positive effects on a company. Urška Jež, an expert in the field, will present current trends in cross-field integration and the multiplier effects of successful cooperation with the cultural and creative sector to various interested entrepreneurs.

Connecting companies directly with culture can have a wide range of effects, some of which are distinct and often better than other sponsorship and marketing communication arrangements.

The workshop will teach companies about the effects they can achieve if they direct sponsorship funds to cultural events and organizations; what challenges both in the environment and within the company can be addressed by including cultural sponsorships in their programs; and what additional results can be achieved by incorporating culture into the day-to-day life of the company.

The workshop is an opportunity to become better familiar with the specifics of non-governmental (NGO) cultural organizations, with a particular focus on managing a diverse portfolio of target groups with which NGO cultural organizations interact in their work. We will also discuss the specifics of the NGO cultural organization operations and how they affect the development of models and competencies that can help grow organizational culture at companies, help gain competitive advantages in the market, or new perspectives on environmental challenges.

The workshop will be held in three locations in Slovenia – in Koper, Ljubljana and Maribor. The number of participants is limited. You can register for the workshop by sending an e-mail to marusa.golob@asociacija.si, no later than September 6th.

The Poligon Creative Centre and the Centre for Creativity are invite you to a workshop on tips and tricks for self-employed during pandemic of COVID-19.

There are many services in Slovenia that offer quality support to the self-employed in overcoming administrative and bureaucratic obstacles. Also, the self-employed often get involved in various incubator programs designed to upgrade business concepts. The workshops that Poligonovci have been designing and conducting since 2016 under the common title “Self-employed, but not alone” are slightly different.

Our workshops include exercises and strategies to strengthen soft work skills, which we have been developing at the Poligon for several years with the involvement of over 3,000 self-employed people. Workshops put you – the worker – at the centre instead of your project. We believe that by focusing on sharpening your work skills, we can help you work more successfully, not only on the next project, but in the long run:

→ to organize your work in a more sensible way,

→ to navigate between all the different tasks with less effort,

→ so you don’t sell your services below cost,

→ and not just to live for work, but to work to live better.

The workshop topics vary: from reflecting on your professional path, setting the value of your work and the organization of work practice, to working with colleagues and clients, and navigating between a variety of work roles and tasks. This time, for the first time, we will also conduct a workshop focused on dealing with the new working reality during COVID-19.

Purpose of the workshop Nora Normalnost (CRAZY NORMALITY)

For many, the COVID-19 pandemic is becoming the most stressful period in their entire career. Walking around with masks and measuring our temperature, while the media constantly report on the daily number of infected and dead and present the blackest economic forecasts of the expected crisis, it is no wonder that we feel stress, anxiety, fear, sadness, restlessness, helplessness, irritability, difficulties sleeping and concentrating, and experiencing various physical symptoms and other unpleasant sensations. At the same time, we still need to keep a sober head, pay the bills and acquire, and carry out various projects in much more uncertain conditions than before.

Above all, workshop wants to open a space for safe discussion and finding solutions on how to survive the Corona as a worker in the cultural and creative sector. In the workshop, we will try to:

  1. Make an analysis and reflection of the situation: the challenges of the work and life of creators in the uncertain year 2020.
  2. Design and share different solid approaches and strategies to deal with this “crazy” work normality.
  3. Explore opportunities for mutual support and assistance.

The workshop will be led by Mag. Eva Matjaž, psychologist and program manager of Poligon and Luka Piškorič, economist and director of the Poligon.

Art and the City is a series of events – conferences, workshops, artistic interventions – aimed at promoting and connecting contemporary visual arts, design and architecture through urban development strategies, environmental development policies, the economy and entrepreneurship. The project was created in cooperation with the Slovenian Center for Creativity, which operates under the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana, and is related to the relaunch of the International Triennial of Art and Environment EKO 8, which will take place in 2021 in the former MTT factory in Melje.

The First Chapter of the conference Developing the City will bring together planners, creatives and activists presenting good, creative practices in investment and the evolution of the urban tissue, with a special emphasis on 20th century heritage; in the integration of visual arts in development projects; and in self-organising and community projects aimed at improving the climate in cities. We will become better familiar with both the urban challenges and development potentials of Maribor; the newly planned cultural centre on Rotovški trg; how Cukrarna, the former sugar factory in Ljubljana, is transforming into an art space; what content is being introduced into the industrial heritage of Rijeka in Croatia; how visual art is changing our common habits; and how the temporary occupation of vacated spaces can become an opportunity for community activation.

Guests: Gregor Reichenberg, Rok Žnidaršič, Alenka Gregorič, Idis Turato, Gašper Medvešek, Pavlina Japelj

Program creator and moderator: Simona Vidmar

The program will be conducted in Slovene and Croatian. The organizer reserves the right to change the program.

A collaboration of CzK (Centre fro creativity), the Slovenian Embassy in Denmark and SPIRIT Slovenia presented the exemplary work of Slovenian furniture design September 3–5 at one of most important events in product design, 3daysofdesign, in the Danish capital Copenhagen. The Circle (Krog) exhibition showed selected products from eight Slovenian companies, all of which were made locally and are the result of the extensive experience of domestic craftspeople with the support of contemporary technologies and sustainable production. The exquisite Slovenian designs were presented to architects, the international media, and the interested public. The exhibition was shown at the spaces of the Slovenian Embassy in the centre of Copenhagen.

The participating Slovenian design agencies featured at the exhibition showing furniture and other fixtures (lighting, tables, sofas, toys, even a cathouse) were all selected via an open call by SPIRIT Slovenia, who together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology financially supported the project. A total of eight Slovenian firms were selected and represented: Donar, Folds, Kauch, Lepu, Wilsonic design, Kubus-interier, Tiba, and Guïana.

The main themes of this year’s event were the circular economy and sustainable design. “We can find local crafts, sustainability, recycled materials and inspiring designs in Slovenian design and architecture going back more than 100 years,” says Ajda Cuderman, head of the SPIRIT agency, “ever since Jože Plečnik. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs RS and SPIRIT are proud to present a selection of  contemporary and sustainable design products carefully chosen to relate to Danish design sensibilities that aspire to longevity and craftmanship”.

Matevž Čelik, director of MAO (Museum for Architecture and Design), under which CzK operates, explained: “The presence on international events like 3 daysofdesign is of essential importance for the growth of furniture companies. With Centre for Creativity we’re looking to secure a regular presence for Slovenian design and brands on the international market. While a single show doesn’t mean a great deal, it is important to have an ongoing presence at similar events in order to achieve recognition. Growing online sales enables Slovenian companies to reach international markets, so these kinds of events become even more important, as they represent an opportunity to have products seen and experienced, live.”

“By participating in one of the most important events in contemporary product design in Denmark and across Scandinavia, and by showing exceptional Slovenian designers and products, we ensure the design and production landscape in Slovenia is better recognised internationally”, offer exhibition curators Zala Košnik and CzK Mika Cimolini from CzK. “At the same time it enables creatives to show themselves to the global public.”

“Considering the aesthetics of our designs, materials and sustainable approach to design and production, we feel the Scandinavian countries could be among our main markets outside Slovenia. Therefore, the opportunity to present our brand in the Danish capital at the 3daysofdesign, where the latest design achievements are shown every year, was extremely important to us. I see the participation of Slovenian designers at the event as an opportunity to boost the recognition of Slovenian design in the international arena,” says architect Kaja Lipnik Vehovar. Vehovar is behind the family-owned company Kubus Interier, which is known primarily as an importer of quality furniture by top designers predominantly from Scandinavia.

Kubus Interier is presenting its Fold lights, a new line from the Shadow lighting family, at the international design event. Architect-designers Kaja Lipnik Vehovar and Arne Vehovar designed clean and simple wooden veneer lights of various types.

“3daysofdesign in Copenhagen is one of the most prestigious design events in Europe. As a participant, I think the festival is a good opportunity to present young designers in such a quality market as Denmark’s, where design is an integral part of life. Slovenians also have a rich design tradition, and it’s up to us as young people to continue and develop it. Therefore, my participation in the festival is a valuable experience in my design career” says designer Luka Rugelj, who presented an origami dining table designed for the Guïana company.

The Concrete Garden company exhibited a cathouse and a chair by designer Tina Rugelj at The Circle. Among the products of the Donar company were the Collodi chair by designer Andraž Šapec, and the Nico Less chair by Primož Jeza Studio, who also designed the Venice Sofa. And Brand Folds showed lights designed by Anja Mencinger and Nikolaj Salaj.

The exhibition also included a children’s toy, the Bi Biip car by Mateja Panter and the Oblak sofa, which is the work of designer Luka Bassanese, both of which products created for the Kauch company. The selection of modern Slovenian furniture products created in close cooperation between designers and manufacturers, also included a chair and table by designer Neža Uran under the Lepu company. And a rocking horse for children by Nina Mihovec from Wilsonic Design Part rounded out the selection.

The Danish daily Jyllandsposten covered the exhibition, which was set up at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Copenhagen as part of the 3daysofdesign event:

Among other things, you can see new sustainable products at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Copenhagen, including the armchair “Collodi” by Andraž Šabac from Donar d.o.o. in the shape of a felt cup mounted on a metal or wooden frame, and which is made of 100 percent recycled materials.

“Local materials, craft and durability are key attributes of our exhibition. Sustainable production technology is something that inspires Slovenian designers” says Marie Sauer Johansen, who is responsible for communication for Slovenia’s contribution to 3daysofdesign. The Slovenian Embassy was present at the event for the first time last year. Due to the impact of the exhibition, they decided to participate again this year. The exhibition is curated by an expert group from the Center for Creativity, which operates under the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. “The exhibitors were selected through an open call, with those with the highest marks selected. One interesting example is the set of garden furniture that includes The Seater designed by Tina Rugelj for Concrete Garden. The Seater is certainly a sustainable product, as it boasts a lifespan of as much as 60 years. Another is the “Nico less” folding chair, which is made from recycled plastic bottles, producing a truly minimal environmental footprint” says Sauer Johansen. She also pointed out that the embassy is following all guidelines in order to avoid spreading infection.

Furniture for children and cats

If you walk past the Slovenian embassy, you will also be able to get to know the fun mobile children’s furniture Kauch designed for Bi Biip by Mateja Panter. It is a kind of armchair that looks like a small car on wheels. The piece can also even be used as a stroller. “We chose children’s furniture because we know that Danes appreciate modern design for children’s rooms. I hope that this will surprise visitors, who may not immediately connect Slovenia with modern furniture design,” says Marie Sauer Johansen.

The exhibition of contemporary Slovenian furniture design The Circle at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen proved to be a good example of multilevel cooperation, as it was produced by the Slovenian Embassy in Copenhagen, the SPIRIT agency and CzK. The exhibition received great attention, as the organizers of 3daysofdesign put it on an official tour with selected journalists and architects. By appearing at such events, Slovenian design is becoming better known in Denmark and across the Scandinavian region.

Aimed at creatives, who are wondering how they can protect their creative works, how the process works when it comes to shared authorship, how to protect IP rights in a licence agreement, what kind of IP protection routes exist for creative practices, how to make most of IP rights and how the Slovenian government helps with that process.

IP Thinkshop is a workshop run by the EU co-funded project Creative FLIP, followed by a series of lectures, and, at the same time, there will be an open desk (IP Clinic) for individual consultation on IP rights, which will also run the next day in the Ajdovščina Underpass.

Registration for the IP Thinkshop is necessary, as the places are limited; however, no registration is required for lectures and IP Clinic as they are based on a first-come, first-served basis.
